He wanted to be a Dragonborn/Dovahkiin, not a dragon.
But if you mean selecting him to die and power up the Amulet of Kings because it's HIS fault, then yes. It is more than fair.

You do realize "dragonborn" isn't being a dragon?

Technically he didn't even have to be of Alessia's bloodline to be a dragonborn.

Yes, he wanted to be a legitimate emperor badly enough to fall for Mannimarco's line. Partly out of hubris, partly I think out of wanting stability of a "real" emperor for the land.

There is no character I hate more than Varen, and I only wish the game's dialog gave me the option to express my hatred and disappointment more vehemently. I sacrifice him every single time. I blame him for everything, including the loss of my own soul.

Listen -- If I held it against everyone who ever attempted a profane ritual to change their nature or their place in mythopoeia, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. Did Varen make a mistake? Sure. But to lay the blame for everything on him rather than Mannimarco is a little harsh. Sure, Varen did usher in one of the single greatest disasters of the era, but at least he kicked the Longhouse Emperors out of the Imperial City. That's worth a few years of Daedric occupation, don't you think?

I think I pity him more than I blame him?

Make no mistake, falling for Mannimarco's plot was dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb. It was a stupid thing done by a short-sighted man who couldn't see that the obvious trap was an obvious trap. His motivations aren't even the issue, for me. I can understand if it was about more than ambition (ending the chaos of the Interregnum is a noble enough motivation) but the way he went about it was all wrong.

He couldn't have foreseen how far-reaching the consequences would be, so I don't blame him for that, but I have a certain contempt for anyone who would be led by such an obvious lie... and that includes Varen, Lyris, and Sai. (Abnur, I'm pretty sure, was in on it, and while that's pretty vile, I can at least respect him for being savvy as opposed to gullible).

That said, people can change, and it's pretty clear he regrets what happened. As far as I'm concerned, his post-Soulburst identity is a different person from Varen Aquilarius, the emperor whose fumbled attempt at legitimacy caused the Soulburst and enabled the Planemeld. Punishing him in his current state does nothing but satisfy some personal sense of justice. Which I suppose is the point for some, but not for me.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

He didn't want to be a dragon, just dragonborn. Its an Imperial thing, ruby throne, dragonfires, alessias hier, tradition... that sort of thing.

Still pretty stoopid of him to trust a skeever like mannimarco... on the trustworthyness scale that one ranks only barely higher then an nigerian prince on the internet... but I guess sometimes even generally smart people do something really dumb, like trusting the wrong guy... but be that as it may, he is usually the one who draws the short straw when one of my characters come to the final assault... its only fair after all that he contributes most to fixing what he messed up, right?

I don't blame him. As I understand it he was the legitimate emperor in every other way and if he had conquered anywhere except Tamriel (or had done it before Alessia formed the pact with Akatosh or after Martin permanently ended it) that would have been the end of things. It was just this one relatively obscure tradition (we're told in Oblivion that very few people know the significance of the Amulet of Kings and the Dragonfires) that stood in his way. So it's understandable he wanted to fix it.

And at the time Mannimarco was one of his closest friends and advisors, someone he had already trusted with his life and thought he could trust with anything. He was also supposed to be the resident expert on all things magical, far more knowledgeable about this stuff than Varen. So it's understandable he was willing to trust the guy with this too.

How many times have you, in the course of playing an Elder Scrolls Game used some artifact you've only just heard of to complete a ritual you don't fully understand because some mage said you should? How many times have you done something you didn't really understand in real life because an expert or a friend (or both) told you that you should and you trusted them to give you good advice?

I can't honestly say I'd do any different if I was in his situation. I just hope I'd have the guts to put it right afterwards. (And more importantly that I never screw anything up so badly that it could destroy the world.)

Keep in mind "The Prophet" and Varen are very different, Valen is truelly humbled by his experiences with the moth priests. He was a rich son of a Colovian Duke that raised and army to try and overthrow the daedra worshippers on the throne of Cryodil.

When he succeeded, he was arrogant rich kid that felt he could do anything.... with advisors like Mannimarco and Abnur whispering in his ear massaging his ego telling him he could get want he wanted. If he followed thier advice. Lyris and Sai weren't hired to think, only thier fighting prowess, they just aren't on thier level.

I don't know it is really hard to really blame him, I mean it was soo dumb, but it is the manipulators that I really have to take the blame. They did it willingly not through just letting thier ego take over thier judgement.

Mannimarco already had a bad reputation, If he knew about that though. That is a massive red flag and then I am going to look more negatively towards him.

Does Abnur almost certainly works for a different daedric prince, Mehrunes Dagon like his decendant in Oblivion most likely. Bring on the Daedric war!

    This.

To paraphrase Tywin Lannister, "a good king know what he knows, and what he doesn't." For the things a king or emperor doesn't fully understand they have advisers to fill those rolls. This is why you will see nearly every Jarl in Skyrim had a court wizard. They acted as an adviser on all things magic and provided council on arcane objects.

For a bit of Background, Varen was just a duke of Chorrol, when the then-emperor Leovic (a reachman) allowed open deadra worship. People were angry at the decision, and thus revolted. He wins the revolt and by all rights, should be the right and true emperor. It's not like he seized an opportunity, or saw the outrage as a catalyst to further his own position. In the end it was he himself who was most worried about being a legitimate ruler, and thus wanted to seek out the Amulet of Kings so there could be no doubt about his rule. Being emperor I would assume he knows he couldn't wear it if he wasnt dragonborn, so in walks a powerful sorcerer who claims he can use the amulet to make him dragonborn. His Imperial Battlemage didnt catch that Mannimarco was lying either, so it's not as if it was JUST varen who was fooled. It's the idea of Player Knowledge versus Character Knowledge. WE know he's tricking them, but Varen has no such foresight or knowledge of the future. Like Danikat mentions, how often do we in-game use artifacts or perform rituals we have no knowledge of, and can't imagine the outcome? We just know someone said "take this, and do what i told you to" and you do it... Then suddenly everyone's a zombie or something.

SO as a whole his intentions were good, and he had no reason not to believe those who were closest to him. Me personally; I cant blame him for not seeing thru the deception. Many emperors and kings before and after Varen's time will make the exact same mistake he does. So if the question is, do I fault him for falling for Mannimarco's Plan? No, that's the nature of fooling someone. But if the question is, "Is it his fault Tamriel is faced with the invasion of Molag Bal?" Yes, he should (and does) accept responsibility for his actions. But really, It's Mannimarco, he probably would have done all this regardless, and just used the Emperor as a means to an end. Had Varen not even cared about the amulet, Mannimarco would have still searched for it, evantually found it and did his ritual anyways.

If we want to play the blame game tho... We could blame the Psijics for seeing how dark Mannimarco was, and doing nothing but banishing him from their island. We could blame the necromancers who started to follow Mannimarco and make him stronger. We could blame Molag Bal for tasking him with tricking the five companions.

"Why settle for just stabbing your foes when you can roast them alive in a gout of arcane fire?"
