I ventured in maelstrom solo last night for the first time ever (been playing 3 months now). Got to 3rd zone before I got a)bored b) killed as I wasn’t paying attention.

The first two zones chest gave me some random set pieces (in blue) that didn’t seem any better you find from various quests or world bosses.

How many zones are there in the area and does the loot get any better?

I can see its more fun to do with friends but as im such an old fart, I don’t have any lol

    Hello Suter1972!
There are 9 stages in total, each having one Boss and one Chest such as the option to repair your Equipment afterwards.
The loot you received in blue shows that you have been in the normal version and the loot does not get better or worse. There's a few sets such a succession, Winterborne, Glory that drop in there. When you conquer the Veteran Version, a random Maelstrom weapon is waiting for you and that is definitely worth it with a bit of luck for the right trait!
    Best of luck

Hi @Suter1972, first of all you can only enter Maelstorm Solo. Dragon star is the group Arena.

You have two modes, Normal and Vet. The normal sets are ok though mainly support niche builds. Good for Alts, Quirky setups. Vet however drops the awesome Maelstorm weopon on the final chest. A must have item.

The joy of Maelstorm is learning it, progressing, good XP, and ok drops. That's on normal. Vet is mental hard, and really tests your build to extreme. There are a couple of rounds that are proper hard, including the last boss (I've died a 100 times in the last week trying to crack it)

There are 9 rounds, and 3-5 stages in each. It's worth clearing on Normal at least, good XP, and teaches you about your build.

If you die endlessly, check the death recap, check the mechanics. There is always a reason. And environment damage is the hardest thing. Especially in the Posion level and the frost level.

    Good luck

    Maelstrom is:
    - solo. Only solo. No friends allowed.
    - with blue rings, it means normal difficulty. You haven't scratched the surface of it's content.
    - has 9 arenas, each with three or more rounds.
    - has no must-have sets except for the maelstrom weapons, which you only get from last chest on veteran difficulty.
    - a major pain in the neck.

Check out Joy's VMA guide for more info. It's here on the forums somewhere.

    Thanks guys

That helps and explains a lot. I just ran straight in, through the portal. Didn’t see an option for normal or vet.

In all honesty if im getting killed in the 3rd zone, then im probably doing something wrong.

Im only light armour so when I get surrounded I can handle the mobs with punc sweep but it’s the cheeky buggers on the outside chucking missiles in that kill me. Ive been going for the defense glyph when in there.

Must admit though, it has spurred me on to try and do more group work as I can see it being fun if everyone sticks to their roles

@Suter1972: To set the normal/vet mode you need to use the Group&Activity Finder tool before you enter the dungeon; press "+" on the numpad if you're on PC, go to the Group tab and click the icons under "Dungeon Mode".

But you really MUST be able to complete MA on normal no-death in your sleep before even thinking about setting foot in there in vet mode. It is insanely much more difficult.

@The others: I wouldn't call the Maelstrom weapons "must have". They're certainly "nice to have", but you make it sound like you can't be a good player without them. Many, if not most, ESO players are not able to complete vMA.
    Kind regards,

If you really hate yourself, and I mean like a proper self-flagellating sadist, you can try to complete Veteran Maelstrom. Then again, if you could complete Veteran Maelstrom, chances are that you don't need the top-tier gear it gives you (you're already an immortal übermensch). But hey, if you're a completionist and you positively hate having fun in video games you're going to love Vet Maelstrom. Its a bit like someone with a cat allergy intentionally sniffing a kitten each morning for fun. :P

Normal mode is way to easy. I haven't tried veteran yet but will do soon (tm). I never dared because I heard it is very hard and I don't have the patience, time and so on for something like that and also I wear only light armor. If you die in the 3rd zone you might accidently have entered it on Veteran mode. I believe it was standard on Veteran and I had to change it to normal prior of entering it.

He got blue rewards from the chests, so he definitely entered the arena on normal mode. There are no blue rewards in vMSA, they are purple.

Im on the toxic something zone. I did get blue rewards but im sure I got a purple sash on the 2nd zone. i didn't change any default settings, just went straight in.

The first one had clanfears and guy that multiplied. The 2nd was dwarven centrurans and im on one with the snakes and snake women things. I can generally handle it but its when the boss snake woman throws cr* p at me it wipes me out before i can self heal quickly enough between button mashing

Well, easy way to find out for sure. :) You should have a quest active.

Open your quest log and look at the active quests under "Wrothgar". If the Quest is called "Maelstrom Arena", it's normal mode. If it it's called "Veteran Maelstrom Arena", then you are doing the Veteran difficulty.

    :)

    Not everyone's a super-duper elite player :/ !

I've been playing casually since day one but have never really managed to lift myself beyond 'average' (probably not helped by stubbornly sticking to my rather quirky build, hybrid Nightblade, in RPG mode, as my only character).

I'm fairly chuffed at finally getting through the Rink Of Frozen Blood level in normal mode; I'm pretty certain that vMSA is way beyond my ability!

Something I have learnt though, if it's any help, is that mixing and matching skills to a particular arena can really help; you don't have to stick to a consistent build throughout.

Trust me, it's much more easy going than daily PvP. If you can learn to survive a zerg, Vet Maelstrom feels like a babies first breath. It's people that go against overwhelming odds every single day in PvP that are the masochists as it requires a mother lode of patience and persistence. Even when I first attempted vMA it felt... Not as difficult as people paint it to be. As long as you memorise the one-shot mechanics, everything else is a cakewalk.
It might be hard for those who have never attempted PvP.

P.S. I don't mean to sh*t on anyone's parade, but my point is - spending some time in PvP really develops one's skill and knowledge of the character and ability to adapt to ever changing combat pacing - it's a perfect practice for attempting vMA and going for the leaderboards.

Since you only played for 3 months, I assume you're not max level yet. It's much much easier when your in endgame gear or at least legendary gold weapons. DONT make anything legendary if you're not at CP160 yet.

None of the gear in the arena is good. There is better stuff everywhere. Except the weapons on the last round of Vet mode. You change the level in the social/ group settings.

If you choose to keep working on it, get to the point where you can faceroll the normal round. The mechanics are the same, but things hit a lot harder and the environment damage is ramped way up.

Check back. There's no shortage of people talking about maelstrom on here.

I finished normal Maelstrom when I was level 44 and had 0 CP on my account. And oh boy, I was having a hard time!!! I died countless times. Crafted different gear sets, respec'd... When I finally finished the last boss for the first time, my whole body was shaking and I was sure I would never ever be able to do even survive the first round of the first Arena on Vet mode.

So yeah, I understand everyone who has a hard time with it when doing it for the first time.
I now have more than 500 CP and I am still having a pretty hard time with Vet mode, have not finished it yet. It gets better every day though, I am making progress. My personal goal is to finish vMSA in 2016, so I have a few days left for that and I am very confident that i can do it.

I don't mean group PvP, obviously. Otherwise I could've used other vet trials as comparison...
In any group setting, even if you as a individual perform poorly or make mistakes, someone more skilled can support or even carry you.
The same doesn't apply solo, which is why solo PvP and vMA are very similar. If you have a solo PvP 1 vs X build and knowledge, it will work great in vMA, and I can tell that from experience as all my 450k+ scores I have gotten doing vMA casually with my typical PvP gear without changing neither gear, skills or CP.
I know it's not the best score, but achieving high scores was never my goal, but my point is that it is very doable with PvP experience and gear without spending a fortune for multiple armour sets, CP and skill reallocations.

P.S. I don't mean to sh*t on anyone's parade, but my point is - spending some time in PvP really develops one's skill and knowledge of the character and ability to adapt to ever changing combat pacing - it's a perfect practice for attempting vMA and going for the leaderboards.

PvP and MSA is totally different in PvP you got healers and support from other mates in MSA u solo...

Not if you're a solo PvP'er, and in that case it is a lot like vMA. You have to learn to be self-sufficient, you have to be the healer and the DPS simultaneously.

If you're not enjoying vMA because of the solo content, I highly recommend trying DragonStar Arena. It's a 4 man arena with 10 stages that have different mechanics on each one.
I actually really enjoy it myself, and some of the rewards (Master Weapons) are pretty awesome.

Tbh I never felt like vma is a pain to play. At least for the thing keeping me from often go there is the feeling at the end you get when you open another chest with no desired weapon inside.

But in general its a place that teaches you your class and how to play. Imo its a wonderful place for people that have basically no idea what to do as it teaches them how solo pvp and also endgame pve looks like.

Ofc its harsh and only one mistake can lead to you dieing. But for me thats the beauty in it. Noone else to blame for mistakes, noone to carry you through just you.
