Labor of love

Which MMO (any genre, new or old) is/was truly a labor of love by its development team and not motivated by business decisions? Just interested to see what everyone comes up with and why

I'd say Wow up until maybe cataclysm. Then it just turned into a money pit for casual gamers. Once they took away talent trees and gave people welfare epics, the game was ruined.
Somewhere someone is practicing, if you are not and you should meet, you will lose.

All the hobbyist text MUDs I played where nobody ever paid for them and you would start by playing the game, level up and when you reached max level you'd either play an alt or join the staff and help work on the game either through coding, building, being an admin or testing.

I spent years playing these sort of games and they truly were labors of love.

Am a whimsical Generation Jones gamer. Online RPGs hooked me since '94 and no sign of stopping soon...

I played GemStone IV by Simutronics Co.,a MUD, for about a decade. All the GMs and coders were current or former players and the system was beautiful. It allowed for real time edits to the gamestate, so on the fly GM interactions and story lines bristled with life and authenticity. The player base was never immense, but it is the longest running MUD still on the web. It took me years to reach level cap and several of my friends had become GMs by that time which made for epic fun. It was subscription based, but the subs never amounted to much money for the devs. They did it for love of the game.

I would say past Warfame. They really took a risk pursuing their vision based off of the original concept of Dark Sector, that would have been a futuristic sci-fi game, had it not been changed by "corporate" or who ever was responsible for the financing of the game and changed it to be what ever was trending at the time.

Which this vid shows the original concept of Dark Sector and you can see how similar it is to Warframe:

Wow. Warframe it's totally a Dark Sector realization. Dark Sector changed a LOT from original concept. I'm surprised it retained the name.

I've always felt that the creation of ESO was a labor of love but (100% speculation) it didn't do nearly as well as it needed to on PC launch and the plan had to change to recoup the cash. I think that the buy to play model was not what was planned but was a contingency that was relied upon due to unsustainable subscription numbers.

What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.
