Becoming a fugitive and getting killed while peacefully trading ???

My daughter just played the game for the first time and is traumatized:

She was trading peacefully with a merchant in the trade window, when I saw another player attacking her from the side. Then she probably was defended by her little Daedra figure and the screen went red, telling her she now was fugitive. Then she was killed. All this happened within one or two seconds without pressing any key and without any understanding of my daughter.

How can something like this happen?
How can you become a criminal in the trade screen?
How can you be attacked and killed by another player while peacefully trading?

My daughter is close to tears. Thank you Zenimax for this "first hand" game experience. NOT.

Was she in a group? If so, and a group member committed a crime and began fighting guards, your daughter's toon would have been placed "in combat" mode and her summoned pet would have responded accordingly. This would have made her a Kill on Site criminal. If not in a group, he summoned pet may simply have responded to nearby combat, which made her a complicit combatant. One more reason to put away your pets in town.

And maybe consider that this type of game is not right for your daughter's temperament. This is no reason to be "traumatized" or "close to tears". If the statements were hyperbolic, cool. If you were being sincere, I cannot in good consciousness encourage your daughter's continued involvement in a game like this. And that is no fault or failing of Zenimax.

My daugther was not in any group and she was not a criminal at that point.

I was guiding her from behind through her first steps of the game.
I told her to visit a merchant to see what she could buy or sell there.
When she was scrolling through the offers, I suddenly saw somebody attacking from the side.

While trading peacefully she became a fugitive and got killed within two seconds.
You really think this is a proper game experience?
No. This is most horrible new game experience I ever saw in any game.

I have been playing this game on PC for one year without any of such problems.
However, on PS4 I notice that cities are full of players killing each other.
Could there be a severe bug in the criminal system on PS4?

If your daughter is close to tears because of something like that, perhaps she's too young to play Elder Scrolls Online.

Isn't Elder Scrolls Online rated M-Mature? One of the reasons I didn't let my younger boys play it.

    Client: PS4
    PSN: Derwin0

Due to frequent crashes, I asked PSN for a refund. I might rebuy the game if they ever get their act together.

I would simply have to say this is not a game for children. It is now your challenge to explain why this happened in such a way to minimise her distress.

Then you need to ask yourself what on earth possessed you to allow your daughter to be exposed to this game.

Yes, sorcerer pets have been implicated in unintended consequences and those who know are now unsummoning them in towns.

Yes, there are disgusting human beings in this world who will exploit things in an online game to grief other players.

Yes, you did not think quick enough on your feet to avoid the distress (eg. don't worry darling, your angel protected you (ghost form) - see how they can't hurt you now) so you now have some work to do to repair the trauma caused by your own naive belief that this is a controlled environment game.

Everyone knows the phenomenon of trying to hold your breath underwater - how at first it's alright and you can handle it, and then as it gets closer and closer to the time when you must breathe, how urgent the need becomes, the lust and the hunger to breathe. And then the panic sets in when you begin to think that you won't be able to breathe - and finally, when you take in air and the anxiety subsides...that's what it's like to be a vampire and need blood.

Is is not my daughter who is buggy.
    The game is buggy.

My daughter played "Ni No Kuni" before, a truly great game.
Now that she is old enough, TESO was supposed to be her first multiplayer game.

The first thing she noticed in TESO on PS4: people running around, killing each other. I explained her the legal system and told her not to worry as long as she did not steal anything. Minutes later, without any wrongdoing, while trading peacefully, the game desginated her as a criminal felon. While she was still reading the text about her new fugitive status, she was killed instantly by the attacker. The same felon who probably attacked the merchant she was talking with.

My daugther played "Ni No Kuni", she was not afraid of getting killed.
She was afraid of doing something wrong, as all beginners are.
And now he is afraid of this buggy game and probably won't touch it again. Well done, Zenimax.

btw: I do not understand how people here are defending serious game-breaking bugs.
Are bugs only important if they are affecting you?

Players can not kill each other under any circumstances outside Cyrodiil.. so I don't know what you're actually on about. I'd say if that's the limit of what your daughter can handle, you should do the responsible thing and not let her play this game.

    @BalticBlues

This does sound unusual. Since I know you, and I know you aren't the type to jump to any conclusions, I would say that this needs to be looked into.

First I would make sure that her settings are set to disallow attacking Innocents. (just to be sure)

Then, if you are seeing players attacking other players in PVE zones then do the following:

    1. Take note of the player names
    2. Take a screen shot with the mapped key (if applicable on console)
    3. Do a /bug report and include screenshot (be sure to include player names)
    4. write down the ticket number
    5. Take some video of this as well if possible
    6. Put up anything you collected here.

The Player Bounty system isn't live yet (on PC), it would be interesting if it ended up already in place on the console version(s) by design or in error.

Assuming she hadn't yet stolen anything at all, then (if it were a guard) there shouldn't have been any reason to be attacked by a while in a scene window. If anything a Guard should have either interrupted the transaction process (closing the scene) or waited until the player is out of the scene. If it was a player, then I can see it going down the way it was described based on other PvE and PvP interactions while the player is in any menu or scene.

Sorry I don't have a console., otherwise I'd be happy to assist in testing.

so, just to repeat a bit ... make sure that "Attack innocents" and Auto Loot is disabled while you check into this.

@ppptontus: I have been playing the game for months. I know a bug when I see it.

My daughter did not do anyhting wrong. If she would have stolen something, there would have been a big screen telling here about it, and there would have been a display in the lower right, showing the bounty on her head. NOTHING like this did happen, because my daughther did not do anything wrong. Sitting right beside her and explaining the game, I would have noticed.

She was just scrolling through the goods list of a merchant when suddenly a Khajiit appeared on the right edge with a blow of his sword. Then the screen got black with the message that my daughter now was "fugitive". While still reading the text, my daughter then was killed, probably by the same Khajiit who attacked her or the merchant.

There is obviously a bug on PS4, allowing criminals to spread their criminal state to others.

You "do not know what I am actually about"?
I can tell you exactly: I want Zenimax to fix a severe bug that ruined the game for my daughter.

This setting was active. I activated it myself in her game, right from the start in the prison cell.

The attacker definitely was not a guard, it was another player in cheap clothes.

Good advice, thanks. However, while in the trading screen, you cannot read other players names. If I would not have been so baffled myself and had to calm down my daughter, I wish I had pressed the PS Share button to record this!

Ahh... true. Well re-assure her and see if you can dupe it. :-)

Sorry, all this happened too fast and too surprising. She was just scrolling through the merchant's list when suddenly the Khajit's sword blow from the right hit (her or the merchant, I don't know), then the note about her fugitive state appeared, and when she just was beginning to read, she was killed. She finally was so scared and irritated that she then just hit the exit button to reappear at the nearest wayshrine.
