Why Is My Latency/Ping So High?

OS - Windows 8.1 (64 Bit)

I live in the UK and am playing ESO on the European server. For some reason I am experience major latency/ping issues. I use a skill and it activates 2-3 seconds after I press it. I press 'H' to get on my mount and my character just stands still for 4-5 seconds and then gets on his mount. My latency in game varies from around 200 up to 800, and I have absolutely no idea why. I don't have things running in the background, I don't have anything downloading, etc.

I've attached a couple of screenshots just to show you the problem. One screen is of the ridiculously high latency I've been getting in game, and the other screen is a broadband speed test I did straight after, just to show that my internet doesn't seem to be the problem. As you can see, my ping is 12ms but in game it's 701ms.

Would massively appreciate any help I can get with this, because it's ruining the game for me.

having exactly the same issue. Internet is 7ms ping 107mb down 6mb up and game sits at 200-300 ping and goes to 999+ every battle in pvp, then i disconnect.

Yep, only recently started happening with me also. Been playing on and off since the game released and this issue has only just started happening in the past couple of weeks or so.

I'm on Virgin Media, but I wouldn't say it's down to them at all. Literally everything else on my PC runs absolutely fine with no latency issues whatsoever. I even did a speed test and all seems fine. It's only ESO that is running (or not...) like a snail.

Same issue here but it wasn't that bad until they patched eso the other week and now the game is basically unplayable

I just followed EVER single step in the latency/ping section of the "Known Technical Issues & Troubleshooting (PC)" thread, which is stickied above.

I logged back in to the game hoping this would have resolved the problem, but it's still there. I'm not even bothering to play for more than a couple of minutes because of this, and my subscription is just slowly running out.

Exactly the same bloody thing is happening the last few days to me too...

Got around 8ms ping, 120ish MBit down, 12ish MBit up, pings to various IPs within ZOS' EU IP range is quite ok too, but go in game, go to any combat (Hel Ra or Cyrodiil e.g.), ping goes up like mad, system freezes, alt+f4, try again, freeze again, quite game, don't bother logging back in...

Could it perhaps be anything to do with the fact that I close the launcher when the game runs? I usually do that. Earlier tonight I decided to try keeping the launcher running in the background and I had no latency issues whatsoever. Either that, or it was because less people were on due to it being late.

So I've just been on the phone to virgin after several tests everything seems fine there end, I asked if the policy had changed recently on p2p in which it hasn't, it's still got the limit for peak time though if you go over they'll decrease by 10% for an hour go over again decreases by 16% and so on and so on but even if you played eso all day long this would never go over.

After all the information I believe that this issue has arisen since the maintenance last week which concerns me that zenimax has changed something to try give us better performance but it's actually done the opposite, I did several test on other MMO's to see if I was having latency issues and the conclusion from DCUO,SWTOR,NEVERWINTER,ARCHEAGE is no all ran without a problem.

Seriously, I hope this IS the fix and I'm not just imagining it because everything is STILL running fine since I did this.

I always close the launcher, however this evening so far all seems good here too, with launcher closed

Mine stopped yesterday after approximately 5-6 days of terrible latency. It stopped at approx. 3.30 GMT still had a few strange disconnects which were shared by a guildie in Scandinavia at exactly the same time and i'm UK but the latency was acceptable. Will see what its like today.

Latency was ok yesterday. It remained between 70 and 100 for my two hour session. But I also had some strange disconnects and freezing when I started playing at around 6pm (GMT). Nothing else for the rest of the evening.

I wonder whether all these issues were related to the release of 1.6 an some preparation on their side.

same here few disconnects shared with other virgin media guildies, then nice latency all night with no disconnects.

any official word on if the issue has been fixed?

No word on acknowledging that there is an issue or whether anything was resolved. Just usual silence and pray it will never happen again. Let's see how everything goes over the next two days.

Ping going from 100-120 to 999+
Makes the game near unbearable to play
Hopefully they're just waiting for Greymoor to launch a fix
