Here's why.
It's not about people being able to play the game for free. I have no issue with that, so long as a true paid subscription is still available. I have no issue with a cash shop that offers appearance/vanity
only items.
Here are my concerns:
- The cash shop already has what they call "convenience" items. Like pots. You can bet those will be superior to the crafted ones. Sorry, alchemists.
- The paid version offers significant advantages to subscribers. You might say "well, then subscribe." Obviously I have no problem with that, I've been subbed since launch. This kind of significant advantage, however, creates a rift in the community. Community is one of the most important things to me in an MMO. I can only see it degrading with this model, and I want no part of that.
- Again with community: dismiss it all you want, but I've been in a lot of F2P/B2P MMOs, and the kind of crowd drawn there is... less than ideal. i don't know if it's because the game is free and therefore they don't care if they get banned, or if attracts a lot of immature kids whose parents refuse to pay a sub, or what... but it's something I've seen too many times for me to dismiss it.
- The way they've already set up the system leads to believe it will only degrade from here, with more and more advantageous systems being offered behind a paywall.
- It follows that content will now be more rushed and therefore less lackluster, due to a desire to get more money from paid DLC. Overall quality of the game will likely drop.
Now, my LARGER concern, and the reason I went ahead and canceled my sub, rather than just waiting around to see how this will play out:
I no longer have any faith in ZOS as a company.
It truly pains me to say that. I've been one of the most staunch supporters of this company. Not a blind follower, and not one who accepted everything without question, but one who had absolute faith that they cared about the future of the game and the gaming climate. This has made it wildly apparent that they care only about the numbers, the bottom line.
I'm not naive. I know that ZOS is a business first, as is any MMO. Hell, I went to college for the business side of gaming. There were multiple other routes that could have been taken, however, to increase said bottom line without compromising the integrity of the game itself, and without making an entire group of people feel as though they've only paid to play a beta.
Even if the business model were changed at this point, I doubt I'd come back. If I have no confidence in the way a company is conducting its business with a game, I have no desire to waste my time or my money supporting them.
I'm sure this will just get dismissed along with the countless other "bye" threads that are here and will come, but I needed to say it.
I sincerely hope that I am wrong and that all of you continuing to play the game will enjoy yourselves immensely and not feel duped or ripped off by a company to which you have remained loyal.
ZOS owed me nothing, but I expected much, and perhaps that was my own mistake.
Happy adventuring in Tamriel, friends.
