Suddenly you need hundreds of gold, not tens of thousands.

Instead of gold, what if it was a BoP Token, these tokens you get at the end of a long chain quest, beating a group dungeon, and/or from random mining/cutting/gathering. And being BoP, you couldn't trade them or give them away.
1/3/5 Token for the cost of minor/medium/heavy repairs
1 token for feeding your mount
1 token for wayshrine, 3 to portal to a shrine
5/10/15/20/25 tokens for bank spaces
Just an idea...these tokens could come from anywhere but you get my drift

And what about those who aren't in the middle of a quest chain, but are farming for mats for crafting?
The only way to get leather is by killing creatures. Fighting creatures results in armor decay. Without the drops that convert to gold, under your suggestion, I would be SOL without a way to repair my armor since I am fighting creatures, and not just doing a quest chain.
And what about PvP? Most PvP doesn't involve a quest chain and instead is fighting directly against NPC's and other players. If they are not completing quests, under your suggestion, they would have no way to earn a token to pay for repairs.
Personally, I think allowing crafters to repair their own armor would be very helpful.
There is no reason as a Blacksmith/Clothier, I shouldn't be able to repair my own armor at a crafting station with ore/cloth.

You are joking, right?
1. Feed horse
2. Wayshrine travel
3. Repair Armor
4. Buy Crafting Materials
5. Buy dropped armor from other players for set pieces
What you are proposing is a single player mechanic where you are the only one responsible for doing everything related to your character, from creating armor, looting/harvesting materials, etc.
If you want single player mechanics to rule the game, go play Skyrim.
The whole point of an MMO is interaction with other players. This includes the ability to buy/sell/trade things found in game to those other players.
Removing gold from the game wont stop the problem. Just as with the nerf to the public dungeon bosses, moving the goal posts will only force the bots/sellers to adjust to the changes that are implemented, it wont get rid of them.
The vast majority of gold sellers (over the years) have been from boiler room farmers who are paid a pittance to play the game for someone else, people who create accounts with stolen credit cards, or people who hack/phish/steal someone's characters and loot the account.
Nothing you do in game will stop the problem. It will only serve to annoy the hell out of the legitimate players and force the problem players into another mechanic.
