Hello all,
In no way do I want this to be a flame fest or a "QQ" thread, I just thought I would write down my thoughts on my play time in ESO. I played in Alpha and in a couple of the Beta tests and at first i hated the game, I didn't think it had anything to offer to the MMO market, however before launch a group of friends and I decided to pick it up and play through. Now, as a foreword I am a huge fan of all things Elder Scrolls, I played Oblivion and Skyrim religiously and have played almost every MMO under the sun in the last ten years.
I decided to roll a Nord Dragonknight and play him 2H/ Sword and Board and to my utmost surprise the first 20 levels in the game were completely awesome. I was hooked, I was even at the beginning disappointed with how unsocial the game felt. I began to despise players that were "stealing" my nodes, mobs, chests etc. My friends and I started to find it difficult to quest with each other due to weird phasing and solo content. None the less the combat was fun and fast paced and enjoyed the crafting and the story of the game.
Around level 30 the first slew of bugs reared their ugly head, nothing was worse than plowing through a quest to not be able to complete the last leg to complete it. These bugs seemed to become much more frequent and once I got into Reaper's March it seemed like every other quest I picked up was bugged. The other thing that really started to become apparent was the amount of botters. Nodes became almost impossible to harvest, Public Dungeons were an atrocity, 40 people standing where the boss spawns leading to insta kills if you weren't quick on the keys. The only thing that kept me playing was I actually really enjoyed the dungeons albeit some were bland and had uninspired boss fights.
In the mid 40's the three friends I was playing with gave up, they couldn't take the bugs and bots anymore and I didn't really blame them. So I went to Coldharbour trying to continue on with my experience and finish out the story. The first thing I noticed upon entering Coldharbour was 30-50 level 3 chars sitting at the Shrine. I took my time to report all of them, I started questing and after a couple bugged quests I just gave up and grinded to 50 ( boring as hell for me btw). I was happy though, I even waited patiently for the last quest to be fixed so I could finally slay Molag Bal. I was quite pleased with the last boss fight.
I decided I wanted to do Ebonheart Pact next and lo and behold there seemed to be more bots in the Veteran over world than there was in the 1-50 content. It got to the point where I felt like I was running through and empty world, no nodes, no mobs. The gear in Veteran dropped like candy so I decided to keep playing. However once I got to Vet rank 2, it just wasn't fun anymore, I had a hard time forcing myself to log in and when I was logged I became so damn frustrated with bugs, load screens, bots that I just logged off.
The last thing I wanted to do was check out the PvP in Cyrodil. Which in one word was "awesome". Even if you don't follow the zerg around and lone wolf, the 1v1's and 1v2's were intense. However there was or seemed to me no reward. Now as an MMO the whole carrot on the stick is reward for time invested and it's a shame that something as cool as Cyrodil got so little love in that department.
Alas, with my friends gone and everything else that frustrates me about the game to the point of nerd rage, I couldn't justify paying a sub for another month of play. I really hope that the devs can salvage the good foundation that they have for the game because I do think it has possibilities, but at the end of the day the game feels rushed and under developed post lvl 30. The game in its current state feels like a single player game with multi player dungeons, trade chat is mostly filled with "is this still bugged" which sucks to see. Im not bitter about my purchase as I sunk countless hours leveling up, but those were some of the loneliest hours to date in an MMO I've experienced. I'm definitely going to be keeping my eye on the game and what it has for the future.
Thank you to all who took their time to read this, and keep in mind this is just my opinion. Different strokes for different folks. Skål.
