How do resists work?

Tried googling this, haven't found anything. Started an enchanter, have crafted aa resist 225 and a resist 150 glyph. Can apply these to jewelry.
But what effect do these actually have?
Do they stack? (ie if I had two pieces of jewelry would it be 375?)
And what is the resist based on? (I know it can't be 225 pts of damage, but don't know exactly how resistance is determined)
