As an IT professional... I'm sad to see this flop

matthew.lillywhiteb16_ESO
I would just like to say that if I was involved in rolling out a new piece of software with this many bugs, content roll backs, downtime and unhelpful patches I would no longer have a job.

Not only that but even basic data security rules have not been followed in major area's of this games database handling.

While you focus on reducing the effectiveness of grinding, I cannot even complete core story line quests. Thus feel constantly behind in levels trying to find where I missed a quest line...

I'm sad to see your efforts go to waste and another MMO fail in its infancy... I wonder when the game industry is going to learn how to handle game releases.

But I guess that won't happen until consumers stop pre-buying and FORCE the professionals to shape up.

Sincerely,

A concerned video game enthusiast

I don't exactly value a game that runs flawlessly. I value a game that captivates my attention. I value a game that makes me rage about the bugs, because the game is so much fun despite them. I value the entertainment that a buggy game can still bring me.

Consumers still pre-purchase & are accepting of a buggy game because the bugs usually aren't game breaking. It's like a flaw on a painting, the imperfection doesn't ruin the work of art around it.

You bring up some good points, OP. Pre-buying, as an issue that causes a lot of these failed launches, never occurred to me. But with all the "free stuff" companies give away for pre-orders, I'm not sure a decrease in pre-orders is going to happen.

I guess it's all about the collective gamers' trust in publishers. Bethesda/Zenimax, to me, was a very trusted, quality game maker. No longer. I won't be pre-ordering anything but the next Fallout.

Still love this game. Not sure if there's enough time to save it. Maybe "failed MMO" is a bit premature?

It is a success. Bugs will get fixed but obviously not all of them can be fixed at once.

As an it professional I would hope you would have a better appreciation for the amount of tech hurdles that were successfully made too.

Really, calling this a failed launch because a handful have issues or you disagree with a design choice makes you a troll, not I for stating I see it as a success.

I like the game as well, but it wasn't ready for launch in this condition. I said as much in my feedback on the last two beta periods. I'm enjoying it enough to sub, but I know others are having more serious issues, and my own limited dealings with customer support have be almost uniformly abysmal.

Oh for the love of... /facepalm

There's being real about issues and still supporting the game and developer, and then there's... this.

I doubt anyone here is devaluing the work and expertise put into this game. But, as paying customers, there are significant problems that should have been cleared in beta. Just supporting the game and its makers doesn't fix that customers are paying for a broken game.

In no way did i say i do not enjoy the game.

The release is a flop, because of the shear number of failures on the developers end.

If I provided a business with this level of support i would not be an "IT Professional".

I truly hope that in 2-6 months that this game is play able and continues to develop good content updates.

But in the current state of the game I don't feel the level of enjoyment i do from "lesser" free to play games ATM.

Thing is, I'm totally against pre-ordering games. But, this one had a beta that basically let me try out the product prior to ordering it. So, for the first time in years I pre-ordered ESO.

The pre-ordering trend is a real problem with a lot of game though. Because consumers are lured in with prizes and then given next to no information about the actual game. Reviewers are under non-disclosure until after those orders have been filled, and at that point people are usually too proud to say they made a mistake and cancel the order or return the product when it utterly sucks.

With the amount of pre-release information on this game, I don't really see pre-orders as an issue for people being mis-lead. If you were too lazy to watch reviews, streams and even sign up for the beta to experience the bugs first hand, then I have no pity for your displeasure over this game.

@Ragnar - I used the OP's term of "failed" to suggest that the OP feels that the game has already failed at launch, and even suggested that such language use on the OP's part may be premature, as Zenimax still has time (I think) to fix these major issues and make the game a success.

I know you are all about attacking me because I call you out on your unthinking fanboism, but please realize I'm not just setting out to denigrate a game that I still love, or a game producer that I still want to succeed.

I find it hilarious the amount of whiners we have here I have played almost every major mmo release since wow and this has been one of the least buggy launches I would have loved to see people like the op play wow on launch biggest mmo in the world and for the first 2 weeks the game was offline cant even log into it more than it was up and when It was up it would take days to loot an enemy rubber banding broken everything and they worked their *** out and well as many other mmos granted a few fail like age of conan which I loved the combat in that game but the reason that game failed was lack of content more than anything else so people get off your high horse and either quit mmos or wait a month or two and then buy the game.

NO game was ever bug free, seriously since when are you an "IT Professional?", 1 day?

The game is perfectly playable, you should have been a part of the AOC, SWTOR or Warhammer release - you would actually value TESO a lot more.

While I agree that some things didn't go as planned, like the missing game key´s, broken statues or bugged quest´s - the game is in a much better shape than pretty much all MMO´s of the past 10 years on release.

Personally I would love to see a 4 core support, Mantle support and a relocation of the European server - besides that the client and the game is totally fine.

Content is another thing, there housing is absolutely crucial and should roll out in the next few months, its what makes ESO so different from other RPG´s and we need a housing system.

After that we could think about a merc system and additional guilds & new territories. ´Right now however, there is so much content that a player who doesn't rush through the game is busy for at least 2 or 3 more months.

They do. The public has caused the shut down game studios before, forcing the developer to make sweeping changes, or file for Chapter 11.

I know 20 game studios were lost in 2012. Not sure how many fell in 2013.

They are particularly vulnerable when they are subscription based. Because of the added expectations and continuous pressure to release a great product, not a defective product.

Well if thats your definition of "flop" then pretty much every single MMO ever is a "flop". No MMO is perfect at launch and yes most have some bug problems that do get fixed in time.

WoW at launch was ten times as worse then anything that is happening with ESO.

Well i'm glad you all found some measure of excitement from this post.
My personal experience is that the bulk of the MMO community (in my city) who waited for the release instead of pre-buying have been rewarded with many posts all over the internet about the "Failure" of the game launch.

It isn't just my opinion, and i wanted to share it with the developers.

If you don't agree, that's fine i hope you continue to enjoy the game.

    Cheers.

Yes it is sad that this phenomenon has become common place in the MMO community and that users like yourself are happy to lap it up from the bowl.

Don't put words in people mouths. I didn't say or infer anything about being happy about anything.

Just saying that if you apply the same logic you are to ESO to other MMOs then you could really call them all a "flop". In cases like this a little perspective might be good so a thread don't come off as just another whine post.
