Terrible Tech Advice - GM patch fix has left me with a 22gb re-install at incredibly slow speeds

I deleted the .version files wherever I found them and now have a 22GB download to wait (and pay) for. What did I do wrong according to the advice given above?

Have I done something stupid or am I right in thinking that the above is really poor technical advice to give out to a player-base that is not all super PC savvy?

Seriously guys, I have never bee angry at your maintenance periods but PLEASE answer this thread. I have fibre but at the current download rate it will take the rest of the night to re-install the game. I think this is one good case where you owe me an explanation.

The launcher uses the .version files to check what version you're running vs what's on the server. If they're deleted, then the launcher apparently has to start from scratch. Now, the repair tool SHOULD fix issues like this, but apparently it's like the ME3 ending - just a light show.

I fell for the suggestion, too. I paused the install, closed the launcher, restored the files from my recycle bin, and reopened the launcher. No error, and I'm logging in now.

After you delete the .VERSION files open the launcher and let it start the download, but do not wait for it to finish. Just close to launcher after it starts and re-open it. It should start a file check and only re-download missing or damaged files at that point.

I just did this and its cutting down the download time as I am typing this

Cant the customer support person who told us to delete the version files please post a download link to the version files so that I dont have to download 22g? We trusted you.

Thank you, I can't tell you how pleasing it is to find a response on these forums that is actually useful.

I did as you suggested, however, I now get error 201 when the game tries to launch after I input my password.

Zenimax, can you please attempt to at least be as if not more useful than the other players and HELP ME?

how bout you stop opening 15 threads on the same topic and read responses in the thread you quoted... how much time wasted reading 15 copies of the same replies, in near duplicate threads are wasted when they could be addressing the problem.

I get you are upset, I don't mean to diminish it, I'm waiting on a long re-patch too, but opening new threads just to get a personal answer is a waste of resources needed elsewhere.

ZOS, please address this - it really is awful customer service. I've been patient but this needs an answer. For some people, Internet is not a free limitless resource, it has to be paid for with limits....

I just ignored the error, closed the launcher and restarted it and started my game. Problem solved! It was a non-issue!

For some, that works, for others, not so much. I predict a new patch in days if not hours. I'm wondering if anyone who has logged on has tried quitting then coming back in...does the launcher still work perfectly?

Cheers mate but this did not work for me at all.

ZoS, your silence on this is truly terrible. I have been patient through all the maintenance periods because stuff happens. But it's such a let down when you ignore these pleas for help or clarification on the forums.

No it does not work every time. I've tried it myself.

So, I was downloading the patch, it was at about 75% and I went to go get some lunch. Came back and instead of a play button, I have an install button. Before clicking it, I restarted the launcher, hoping it was a bug. Nope, I have to download the whole 22GB again. I didn't have any login errors, didn't repair anything, didn't delete version files, just went to lunch. Ugh!

I just logged in again. Yes, I got the error 209 after logging out, closing the launcher and restarting it. I ignored it again. Closed the launcher and restarted it again and it was gone. They will re-patch this eventually, for now it's just an annoying thing to have to restart the launcher twice to get the error message to go away. I still can get into the game just fine.

Tried closing the launcher, re-downloading, running as admin. Nothing seems to be working.
