Why is the NA server always down for maintenance on Tuesday morning/afternoon west coast?

paladin_66_ESO
Am I missing something, or is there no good reason to take down the servers on Tuesdays in the morning and afternoon for the majority of NA time zones? Why not do this at like 1am west coast US time for the NA servers? Or am I missing some mundane detail that makes this make sense?

Sucks since I am off on Tuesdays and I always miss half of my time off to play, but I know it has to be done SOME time...just why not the middle of the night in NA for NA servers when MOST people are not playing?
  • teedizzle78b16_ESO
I wonder the same thing. Makes no sense to do it during the day. At 2am pst would be a good time for shure.

yep. I am off on Tuesdays as well. I guess I'm just used to the industry standard of doing downtime in the middle of the night or really early in the morning, and kind of expected the same kind of consideration from this game / company. But I also expected such common features as being able to change my forum name, and an auction house. Silly me.

Oh no. I'm off on Tuesdays as well, and now they say game won't be up until "early evening".

I've done enough whining about problems with this game. I just need to admit It's just not working for me at all timewise. I'm off on Tuesdays, and weekends. Over weekend, and today game was down at times I could play.

Guess I'll play til end of month, finish out free month of play (if I'm able to play). Too bad too, invested a lot of time over beta and of course paid a lot for game itself. Lesson learned, no more mmo's for me!
  • paladin_66_ESO
Yeah I mean, I get some people are always playing at all times, but it makes sense to go where the MAJORITY of people are not inconvenienced...I mean, is there a good reason or is it just lazy stupidity on BS/ZM part?

I direct you to the Dev's post about maintenance times. And like it's been said several times over, they did in fact do research into the appropriate times. Just because said time is bad for a handful of people, doesn't mean its bad for the entire server overall. Granted somewhere, to someone, maintenance will take their game time away. With that being said, I also direct you to the Terms of Service, where it states that Zenimax has the right to take down the servers for any length of time, at any point in time.

Also if you've been following the maintenance posts you would know that today's maintenance has been extended longer than they wanted, because they are trying to polish the game that we all love so dearly. You know all those bugs that have been happening, that's what they're trying to work on.

  • paladin_66_ESO
I find it impossible to believe...IMPOSSIBLE I say, that for a NORTH AMERICAN server...the best time to patch for 4+ hours at a time is from 7 or 8 am PST and 10-1pm EST to like 12-2 PST and 3-5 EST or later. That is a crock. Amazing that they did "research" and found a completely different result from every single other MMO ever pretty much in this time zone. Also, I get that its longer than expected...although based on the last several patches...it seems like longer than expected is actually to be expected every time. I am not complaining about patching, etc, so lets dispense with the nonsensical gushing affection for BS or ZM. It is no more useful than the idiotic stream of OMGWTF HOW DARE YOU PATCH EVRRR stupidity people post. I simply asked if there was a good reason that they patch during middle of the day in a time zone that supposedly is the time zone for the population it serves.

Yes paladin, seems to me that late at night, say 2am would be best time. Eh, don't want to inconvenience their workers I guess.

MAJORITY of people have day jobs so they are playing after 7pm every night, not during the day as you claim. Unfortunately some people have a day off on Tuesday but the MAJORITY would have weekends off, not Tuesday.

Maintenance (and i mean the regular not the unscheduled ) has been bad for all of great brittain / europe since it's allways around 16.00 ish.

fact of the mather is that if you want to survive you have to make sure you do maintenance in hours where the least people are playing. and that is different for every region. so they can't do maintenance during the night/morning in america for a EU server. because it's not the same time in europe as in north america.

if they want to get rid of this they should just move the EU server to Europe where it is placed best for EU players and put an EU maintenance team on it that takes it down in the nights and not during prime EU times

and yes, i do know this is a topic about the NA server but it's the same for that. make maintenance like around 02.00 at night and most of the time you'll have a window of roughly 7 hours before the most people would start playing again.

Uhm... The regular EU server maintenance is scheduled for 5AM British Summer Time. How is that "around 16.00 ish" for all of Great Britain and Europe?

Which my username for forums used to be something along the lines of my e-mail and then i changed it to this. Now if they disabled that function then idk. But how i did it with no CS involved.

Yes, I have had many jobs that started at say Midnight and I worked until 8AM (its called Graveyard Shift) so why the hell ZOS server maintenance crews can't work a shift like that is completely beyond a normal persons comprehension.

We, the customers, are NOT here for ZOS's convenience, they are here for OUR convenience and it is time for them to learn that!
  • Sacred_Warrior
I agree. They picked a very inconvenient time for some of their customers, but the majority rules. While I get it that there are people doing this maintenance, and they also have lives, it is of the utmost importance to the success and longevity of this game that the time be pushed forward in the morning to a more offpeak hour, especially when it runs this long. I have Tuesdays off as well and not being able to play because of an unexpectedly long maintenance time is deserving of some extra time compensation.

No matter when they do maintenance, someone is going to be impacted. Keep in mind that this is an east coast company, therefore their times are based on eastern time zones. Also keep in mind that in the history of mmos, tuesdays have seen the least traffic so that's the best time to do maintenance. With that being said, this maintenance was supposed to be over earlier, so you're not the only time zone being effected.

Really? You think the majority of people on the NA server play at 8AM-12PM EDT? You honestly don't think the server load is at its' peak, say, after 6PM EDT?

Well there's your problem right there! You're playing the game from Europe on an NA server. What do you think that the devs said... "oh people from Europe are playing on the NORTH AMERICAN server, so lets change the maintenance time to suit them!"

In response to your "they should move the EU server to the EU". Well if you've been doing any reading and keeping up with things, you would know that they are working on getting the EU physical server moved. It's just taken a bit because they've been having to deal with everyone whining about broken quests a week after a launch of a brand new game O_o

I was in all Beta sessions.. I changed my forum name NP.

but I agree with the OP .. Since nearly every other MMO I have ever played since EQ has figured out to do maint. at 1AM est of later.. pretty sure its safe to say that is a much better time for it then the middle of the day. While a lot of customers are at work/school, a lot like myself either work nights and or maybe our weekends are not sat/sun.

Which MMO is undeniably the biggest right now?
With, last I checked, 13 million active subscribers?

If I am understanding this post correctly, than I invite all those that said that maintenance at 8am est is not effective, to look above. Welcome to what MMO players have been dealing with since the best part of 2001. Those that said that "other mmo's don't do maintenance at this time" are either insane, or haven't had a lot of gaming experience (or at least not mainstream gaming). Most every MMO I have played has done maintenance on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and some even the weekends. Remember people, just because YOU'RE off on a certain day, doesn't mean server activity just STOPS when you aren't playing. There are other people to keep in the consideration. Until any of you that have suggested that they aren't going by a activity log of some kind, work for Zenimax, I invite you to please just shhhhhhh.....

Whilst it is a critical epic failure of zenimax for their selected "server maintenance" times it "tracks" with their own "office hour's" they are basedout of maryland u.s,a which is east coast "zone" launching a world wide game on two separate singular servers is well simply an absolute failure of concept there needs to be multiple servers for each of of the "mega servers" so they can rotate maintenance times and keep the game up just fix crap in an offline version or "maintanence only/dev only beta server" then integrate fixes once completed in bulk allow the customers to continue to play unfixed game then a small 10 /15 min or less patch and relog ... also the whol issue of having to doubble install the game to play on both the "eu server/american server is complete bull crap " i do not need to waste 120gb of my system to play one singular game the fact that this game takes 60gb alone to be played online is crap as well if it was stand alone or could be played off line/single player it could be seen as understandable the simple fact you cant swap your account/vcharaters around to play on whatever server is up and operational is also a failure while i severly dislike blizzard i think zenimax could learn a thing or 3 from them about having multiple servers .....

Thank you MR. IT. Now if you will do me the favor of naming off those games, that you just mentioned, that utilized megaserver technology. Oh what's that? You can't! That's right because this is one of the first of it's kind!!! You need to realize that the other companies that did their server maintenance in the middle of the night or very early in the morning, had SEVERAL servers. So players gaming wasn't as impacted. This game has 2 servers, not 20+ like all the rest. Please join the conversation with intelligent feedback or retorts, not some idiotic, half wit statement.

That would be "Mrs. IT", actually. And I don't give a rat's ass what kind of server technology a game uses....the idea is to schedule maintenance in such a way that you inconvenience the fewest paying customers as possible...IE the middle of the night.
The amount of servers has NO impact on scheduling. How do you even think this is an argument?? This is like trying to claim that the price of nail polish effects my cell phone coverage.
