How does Damage Shield on weapons work?

There are effects on some swords I've picked up to the effect of "gives 50 point damage shield for 8 seconds". So how does that work? Does it mean 50 damage is absorbed at the start of battle? 8 seconds from when....?

If it is like flame staves enchantments is when you use it. So I would say time starts when you start blocking. And how often? I don't know.
