Why can't I play with my friends in an MMO?!?!?!

RichterVonStrid
I am already ripping pissed about not getting my game in time, despite promises that we would, but to make matters worse I just realized that even when it does show up I won't be able to play with my friends. Since they are running around and leveling while I sit here wondering what I did to ZOS to deserve being left out in the cold. When the game finally does show up I will be so far behind them in quests and levels that I am not even sure I will want to play it anymore. Thanks to their ridiculous system of not being able to redo old quests, anyone that is not in the same exact point in the game cannot play together. Unless we really like chasing invisible characters with floating arrows!?

What is the point of a multiplayer game I can't play with my friends?

Every hour that goes by with not even an attempt to help the ones they left out to dry, I come closer and closer to returning the game. There is no shortage of great games made by companies that don't treat their highest paying customers like ****.

If your friends are levelling without you, what do you expect Zenimax to do? My girlfriend is in this situation (although not due to any fault of Zenimax - she cannot download the game digitally because of internet cap limitations, she has to have a physical copy at least to start with, 100mb patches here and there aren't a big issue). She lives in a very small town, and physical copies will not be there until today at the very earliest.

I got my character up to level 8 (basically just finished the starting island). And from this point I'm waiting for her. I'm messing around with a couple of alts, so I can see the other 2 faction starting areas. I'm not in any hurry to rush to max level, and being able to play with her is more important to me than seeing all the content right now.

If your friends are understanding, they would either wait for you, or be willing to roll an alt with you until you can start. Why is it Zenimax's issue that your friends decided to leave you behind?

I'm fortunate enough that my girl is waiting on me to level together.

I feel terrible that her subscription timer is counting down while I am unable to log into game, but I appreciate her thoughtfulness.

I feel your pain OP, albeit in a different way.

I'm hoping mine appreciates my thoughtfulness too. :) I'm sure she does. But I'm not wasting my subscription time, I'm just exploring the other starting zones, and getting to know the game.

I am not blaming ZOS for my friends playing a game while the counter is ticking. I am not blaming my friends for using a product they paid good money for. I just realized that it makes this sting just a little bit more. I am pissed that I am in this predicament in the first place.

We were promised that we would get our CE games delivered in time. Many of us have not received them yet. Part of the blame lies on retailers and part of the blame is on ZOS. They should have saw this coming and taken simple steps to avert it or correct it now. They could have sold the CE on their site, but didn't. They could have required retailers to ship CE orders ahead of time to ensure we got access to the game, but they didn't.They could have required retailers to email our codes (like they did with the early access) to us the day the item shipped, but they didn't. They could have extended grace a few days, but they didn't. They could have allowed us to order a month sub and put in the code later for the 'free' 30 days, but they didn't. Re-sellers cannot fix our access issue, only ZOS can! It is going to cost them a lot more in bad press and cancelled subs than they would lose in extending grace. Or they could easily implement any of the other fixes we have suggested that would allow us to play They could apologize and save face and avoid the bad press by extending grace. So many things they could have done or could do other than than sticking their fingers in their ears and pretending they don't hear us.

I'm sure she does as well, and good on you for being considerate towards her. =)

Mine was in the beta tests with me, so there isn't really much left to do in terms of early game exploring without it being a rehashed experience.
She has been rerunning areas and gathering crafting supplies though, so not a total waste I suppose.

Her patience is meaningful to me though. I feel like it is probably one of the only things keeping me from blowing a gasket myself right now.

I can understand your frustration...but Zenimax really doesn't have any control over third party retailers. A lot of them underestimated the demand for this game. Shipping sometimes encounters delays. There is a big thread about this issue that states some of the retailers that are encountering delays have worked out solutions where they will give you the key before the product ships. You might want to check with the retailer and see if they have any options.

I am also wondering why we can't simply go back and redo old quests with our friends instead of spending half of our time in game figuring out what quests we have that are close to the same level of completion and waiting for people to catch up before we can have fun playing together. Give me 1% of the xp the second time around, i don't care. But don't make it so friends have to create special dates with each other to casually have fun in a multiplayer game. It is stupid.

No one is stopping you from having "casual fun." Go to a major city and party. What you are asking for is to let your friends quest with you all the time. There is no reason why you shouldn't have to be around the same level for this to happen.

This isn't stopping you from chatting with your friends. If you want to be somewhere constantly with your friend, go to the mall. The mall doesn't have phasing.

What?! All pre-order games will be shipped on the product release date. THAT IS ABSURD! I can see why this would be policy for offline games, but what diff does it make if I have my art book and statue early?! The code is worthless until ZOS opens the servers. It isn't like I could get in ahead of time. Like I said, Why didn't ZOS know that retailers were planning this? This is not their first deal together. This should have been anticipated and ZOS should have stipulated that retailers MUST ship physicals ahead of release to ensure high paying fans got what they were promised. And ZOS did promise us that we would have the game in time. Sure, trucks break down, etc, but that is not what happened here. I spent a lot of money to PRE-ORDER a game that I do not have days after release. Fine ship the damn game on release day, but EMAIL US OUR CODES then!

It's your lowbie friends that should not benefit from you being a higher level. Power leveling is a no go in any decent mmog but they should at the least allow you to do it if you want to for little to no exp.

I hear ya. But I got this game to quest with my friends, not to listen to spammers shout in cities. If I wanted to play w/o my friends I would have kept working on my current Morrowind play through.

So you are upset because you chose "Value Shipping" which is always slower and never guaranteed to get you games on release date and you are upset? Also, they clearly state they don't ship until release date. If it is Game Stops policy not to ship the publisher has no control over it. You have no argument here with Bethesda or Zenimax, only your own expectations.

I have this same issue. I tried to help my friends through Spindle the other day because they were struggling to find people to clear it with them. We finished it, only to find out that because I was already in my high 20's they weren't given any credit for it. I would like the option to go back and finish these things with them whether it lowers my level or what. But if I have a friend that starts playing this game while I'm already at max cap or close to it, the only option I have is being forced to create an alt to play with them.

While I understand this is a new game, there does need to be some system that allows people to level sync to encourage higher level players to help or go back and go through content with friends/guildmates, etc.

I thought "travel to friend" would get you in the same phase with your friend. Phasing was more of a spread out the population thing. Have you tried traveling to friend (both of you need to do it) and you still can't see them just because they are on an earlier quest?

Some zones change relative to quest completion. When a zone is changed for one player, but not the other, it is not possible to phase together.

You just hate to read or something? ZOS TOLD US THAT WE WOULDN'T NEED EXPEDITED SHIPPING. If ZOS wanted to make shipping earlier part of the deal to carry their product, they absolutely have the right to do so. Do you not understand how contracts work?

Furthermore, only ZOS has the power to correct this. I would be perfectly happy paying for a month now and using the code next month. ALSO WITHIN THE POWER OF ZOS. But they refuse to allow us access.

You know damn well a lot of people who ordered next day shipping didn't get it either. I have seen you trolling other people's post as well with your tired garbage. I ordered on 1/30. Why the hell should I have to pay extra shipping on a game i ordered MONTHS ahead of time. It is a stupid policy and you know it.

So how about a system where you could only redo quest 3 levels higher or lower together? It sure would help out a lot of us!

Zenimax doesn't have the ability to make 3rd party retailers borrow the Enterprise to beam your shipment to your house on release day. It follows, that you aren't going to get your installation key before the product arrives at your house, unless the retailer emails you a key first. A little common sense is required here.

A couple of other games I've missed out on launch day, because I was waiting for the UPS guy to arrive with a physical collector's edition.

No one is talking a bout beaming anything. What are you smoking?! I made perfectly valid and feasible suggestions. Your hyperbole is neither helpful or appreciated. There is no reason to not ship it early and they emailed me my early access code so clearly they have the technology to email the full code once I am charged and the item ships.

However, if you find a holodeck, LET ME KNOW!

Playing ESO in a holodeck would be awesome! But shipping early...generally doesn't happen. My copies of Diablo 3 and its expansion shipped the day before release (with next day shipping). Every game I've ever preordered shipped the day before release. Next day shipping was sometimes an option, other times it was not.

Yes, it is common. I am not arguing that. But WHY?! I understand if it can be played offline, but an online only game has no reason to be withheld like that, unless you are trying to suck more money out of people for shipping or something. Not sure why they would even want that unless the CEO of GameStop has stock in UPS or something. It is outdated and uncalled for.
