Has there ever been talk/rumors of adding drivable ships and naval combat?

I know it would be a tremendous undertaking, but it would be AWESOME for ZoS to add naval exploration and combat, akin to what they had in Archeage.

From a PVE aspect, there could be islands to explore with delves/world bosses. For a PVP aspect, you could have naval combat and/or PVP zones for treasure hunting.

I know it's just a pipedream, but it would be amazing.

Edit: at first I thought it was a troll post but since it seems genuine my opinion is... The quest in Greenshade (wasn't Malabal Tor, my bad) was cool and I wished for more back then, but my feeling is that "ships-fight games" are hard to do right and they don't appeal many players.
While interesting in concept and good to have in a once-in-a-while occasions, I don't know if I would want it implemented in ESO... Jousting seemed more likely to happen in the High Isle era but we didn't get that, so I suspect it would be a hard task.

With High Isle there was some theories about naval combat PvP. Would be really cool (maybe 8v8 on 2 ships where you have to use defensive and offensive items on the boat), but it wasn’t what we got anyways.

The game just doesn't support that kind of complex mechanics, I even remember the devs saying they had to make it so if the player jumped onto the boats passing thru Gonfalon Bay they'd slide off, cause if you stood on top of a moving boat it'd crash the game.

There is simply no way something of this scope could be added to the game in its current state and with the current resources devoted to it. Neat idea for some future thing though, or if we were to ever get ESO 2.0 in a new engine or something.

What an odd limitation. Even games much older than ESO allow players to ride on boats.

EQ2, for instance has ferries that take players between zones. Same with capes. The Hero engine has a lot of weird limitations and quirks.

There is one such quest already that does involve some fighting onboard a ship......

Pelidil's End which is part of the Greenshade questline and is set at Seaside Sanctuary, I always remember that one because it was good fun! :)

Isn't there one in Stonefalls too? Can't really remember now, but seems like there was a "board ship and use ordnance to kill...." sea serpents maybe? At the Dagger's Point Invasion area IIRC?

Perhaps none of those were moving, though.

Probably not, the quest I remember is just you’re on a ship and then the enemies are on another ship, but they’re stationary. We could have naval battles without the ships actually moving, just might not be as cool.

    Oh, right - no movement....

The Fair Winds ship house does "move" but in the loosest sense of the word! Jumping overboard is quite fun too.

I am not 100% sure the game and engine could not handle it but I also think there is little interest at ZoS for this kind of thing, which is quite sad! 😥

Stonefalls you only portal onto the ship to witness firsthand the macguffin destroying the fleet.

Sea serpents was somewhere in AD maps I think. Both cases, the ships boarded are technically not moving.

I highly doubt the engine would ever support this or there would be flying mounts. Those have been told never gonna happen as well.

The game would of needed to be designed with this in mind for the git go. Archage had it, it was kind of fun. Older MMO's like Vanguard had sailable ships, but no combat. I think Wayward Realms is the closest thing I will ever get to this again, in how many ever years it takes for that game to become a reality.
