Mostly it's the Hero Engine. It has had issues from the start. Clearly, redoing the game in a better system is possible but they are spending that profit on a new game altogether.

They don't know how. I mean, seriously.... just look at the pages upon pages of feedback about how terrible performance is in that one thread and all they have to say on it even still, months after it's creation, is just that they don't even know what the problem is.

I shudder to think how much I spent on the game when I still played on PS NA... All those “it’s only seven bucks” crown purchases added up.

I only returned to ESO about a year ago after taking a very long break from the game. Spent a fair bit while starting over on utility stuff and cosmetics, but am pleased to say I’ve only subbed to ESO+ for three isolated months this year, and my crown purchases have dropped to zero over the last several weeks. I was buying the occasional cosmetic item here and there, but not anymore — not when I’m lucky if I can bar swap consistently during a trial, not when I’m lucky if I can walk up to a big tri-faction fight without disconnecting.

We obviously don't have influence on their business directions and only limited influence on dev choices, but please for the love of the longevity of the game, feed good stuff back in the game, don't milk us blatantly.

We do not enjoy the "we're removing this feature to improve performance". Especially since it seems performance keeps returning to struggling. Please invest in it instead of diminishing content and features.

Moving everything serverside to be a flagship game to Stadia:
    1) Happened rapidly, meaning spaghetticode entanglements
    2) Contradicted/heavily modified the original server-client 'weight of calculation' divide with the server doing a lot of lifting that wasn't intended in the original combat vision
    3) these facts have made it difficult to "undo" the change - U35 showed an example of trying to disentangle the spaghetti noodles...

I think the combat design (and original on-release architecture) was intended to push most of the initial calculation/lift to the client's computer, and when that original design was updated to be pulled serverside, it was done while the game was live, and done rapidly. I hope everyone can see the impact of such...

It's always puzzled me about the engine.
The game is obviously making money and popular, and given that they're owned by Microsoft couldn't they tap into that and put the game on a newer engine and do what FF did with a relaunch? (No idea how hard it would be but hiring people who are experts in just that would help, surely)

Studios are VERY anti upgrading engines (look at Halo Infinite in house engine and how it destroyed that game. It took them multiple months just to implement match XP because of how clunky the engine was).

With that being said.. the engine is why they can't fix PvP, why they can't fix the rubber banding in PvE, and why overall performance gets worse and worse with each thing they add to the game.

Leadership isn't going to invest millions into a new engine for a game that has more years behind it than ahead. With the next game coming their objective is to just be profitable (stake holders etc).

I wish they would just come out with a massive post outlining how we got to this point, everything they have done over the years, (remember all those tests that they NEVER released what the results were), what their thinking is, and what the path forward will be.

Just...tell...us. Stop this "we are investigating" or "escalating". It's been 5-7 years of this. You mentioned time and time again coms need to get better.

This is the time you deliver. @ZOS_Kevin @ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_BrianWheeler
Will the real LadyGP please stand up.

I so wish they would move the game to a better engine, if it's at all possible. That awful Hero engine is crippling this game.

I think most of the performance issues are server side these days. I mean, there will always be client performance issues, but a lot of them are player and the computer they use. The ones they were working on most recently were server side.

I recall a missive from Firor admitting the server multithreading work was not yielding expected results, so new hardware is the thing, I guess. No word for months to indicate anything different.

tbh, calculations on serverside makes sense, and should have been done from the beginning. Clientside calculations have always been prone to hacking, and exploits.

That's fair, but that's how you get either nerfed/less interesting combat (calculations can't be too intense) or bad performance.

*shrug* hackers/exploiters ruin games, what else is new. You're not wrong.

its simple, they are incapable of fixing it. Or unwilling to put in the money to fix it. Those are the only two answers, there are no others. And imo, they are simply unwilling. They will try little things here and there, but we all know nothing will change. It never has, and it never will. Aside from the few weeks after the restructure, that they claimed fixed everything. When in all actuality it was probably just the same slightly better performance we usually see, for a short time, after a server reset.

If other games can do it, zos could do it. They will not. I play gw2, sure sometimes its framey but thats at massive fights. I have never experienced abysmal, terrible, game breaking, performance, in any other mmo, like i have in eso. consistently, for nearly the entire time the game has existed. the skill delay, in a fast paced action combat mmo like this, makes it feel awful, and honestly just not worth my time anymore.

I remember that. Early on some add-ons were being used to create some unfair situations. So they started moving calculations onto the server

I mean.... what good is a game with no hackers if it means you can't even fire your abilities though. I had multiple fights in BGs last night where I seriously could not attack back, just had to stand there and die.

A lot of unknowns really. Probably does not help that the game is still on old consoles, ZOS has admitted multiple times that messes up memory. You put that on top of hardware issues, quickly done code bc of the way content schedule was done, engine issues, ddos attacks, whatever rules/guidelines corporate has, calculations from players combo'd with things needing to load in and so much more I can't think of... not good.

Also, probably doesn't help a ton that Cyrodiil is just a giant map and it's pretty much all open. If they turned Cyrodiil into a PvE zone then you could split that up into 3 chapters most likely... it's just that big.

    Don't forget about akamai.

But seriously, in the later part of 2024, why is there not a remaster to a new engine? Even then, surely you could chuck a couple of functions into a model and ask it if they could update the code to be more efficient?
Here $15, goat mount please. Not gambling or paying 45 : lol :

That would probably be rewriting the whole game. ESO 2, for all intents and purposes.
