Hello.
I'd like to discuss a feature/bug - I'm not sure which - that I've come across. While this is primarily a feedback report, I would also like for there to be open discussion on the topic to gauge other people's opinions on it and hopefully generate enough noise to be heard by the developers.
This post started with an issue I had regarding the companion perks being one-time unlocks per account, at which point
every subsequent character on that account suddenly learns how to do the following with expertise:
- Discover hidden compartments in treasure chests.
- Distinguish between regular and potent potions found in the field.
- Find packs of dead adventurers when looting world bosses.
- Find hidden wallets when pickpocketing.
- More efficiently catch trophy fish.
- Discover research portfolios among other documents.
There are a few toggles that have been implemented over the game's lifespan, but most either fail to reliably work or do their job efficiently enough; consider "hide polymorph helmet", which doesn't reliably work while some popular addons are installed, and "hide pets and companions", which only activates around crafting stations and not in other crucial places, such as banks - walking into Solitude's bank feels like leaving Skyrim for a safari journey full of clannfears, guardian bears, and giant flapping twilights (Kyrdegrel, or whatever your name is, I've searched far and wide to access your banking services!).
So, here's what I'm suggesting: Gameplay Toggles!
This setting allows players more freedom in game customization by allowing them to decide exactly how certain client-side (stuff that only affects you, not other players) features work. Below, I've included some ideas that I personally would make heavy use of, if implemented well enough. All suggestions have been given an "enabled/disabled" initial state favoring players who don't want to toggle additional options when starting a new character; players who would rather have these enabled/disabled for a specific character will have to manually toggle them - this is so players can continue cranking out characters for various needs without extra character creation maintenance.
- Companion Perks: Disabled by default, this option locks the six - and ever-growing - companion perks behind their original requirements. For example, if enabled, one must meet Mirri Elendis and have her active to be able to discover hidden compartments in some treasure chests.
- Hiding Headwear While Crafting: Disabled by default, this option blocks the automatic activation of "Hide Your Helm" for BOTH characters AND polymorphs when interacting with crafting stations. For example, if enabled, a character or polymorph wearing a hood will continue crafting while still wearing the hood, as opposed to the current state of the game, where it will magically poof into thin air. As an addition, this will also disable the automatic removal of headgear when using certain emotes, such as /drink or /eat.
- Hiding All Companions and Pets, Everywhere (with exceptions): This was partially implemented not long ago, but the feature could be much, MUCH more fleshed out. Disabled by default, this option - actually divided into multiple sub-options for better customization - will allow players to individually toggle the automatic hiding of combat pets, companions, non-combat pets, and quest followers (those unnamed mercenaries, students, warriors, etc. that follow other players in quests where you have a unique NPC like Sees-All-Colors following you) among others in pretty much every single situation where someone would find it annoying or space clogging; for example, you will not see a single winged twilight in cities, near crafting stations, in banks, or anywhere else unless the twilight is engaged in combat in any of those locations - winged twilights are a placeholder here, and this would only apply to combat-capable followers.
The above list is only a small grouping of some immense quality-of-life changes, but it should be enough to give an impression of what I'm talking about. Most, if not all, of these features would be toggled off by default to spare players from extra maintenance when creating a new character.
I'd love to see what your thoughts are on this, and if you have any other suggested gameplay toggles. Thanks in advance if you participate!
