Invest into accounts on eso+ when crown gifting was allowed (not sure when that was). Hold the crowns a couple of years. These people probably were going to sell the accounts with the crowns on them, but then they saw that it was more profitable to sell the crowns for gold. So long as they made over $15/month per account, that was free money. They probably did the gold sales on a burner account. If they profited $10 on 1000 accounts that's $10k per month. Get about 100 people to work on 10 accounts each in a 3rd world country, and that's a career.
Since these were ESO+ accounts, they could also give their services to people who needed to farm items....Thanks to the sticker book, they can then pick up all items EXCEPT the one's that are highly sought after and sell those services for gold. A guild 7 good players that will help with the farm and 4 carries/item loot accounts, 1 that takes all the gear to be destroyed and keep the others from not consuming the weapon, so it drops. Then get gold from those carry players and sell as well. They'll look like normal players. Money laundering at it's finest.
It's too hard to tell the difference. So closing it all out is the only solution. ZoS probably can't stop all the ways they can sell gold for cash. However, anything in the store will never be tied to gold. It must be bought from them with cash straight up.
I am guessing that there were people who bought gold from gold sellers and found people to change that gold to crown items. Thinking about it, the gold sellers probably used the ESO+ crowns and just sold them directly to the customer.
Now that the economy is inflated, they are probably making more money because people are less likely to pay for sub or the crowns.
Remember every month with eso+ ZoS gives 1650 crowns.
The other thing is they might not have to invest into accounts. Instead, they might be buying accounts from people who quit and have all those crowns on them. So now ZoS isn't guaranteed any future revenue until this foreign seller burns through all those accounts.
I've played MMOs for over 20 years I've seen almost all the shady money-making schemes. I only pay for the entrance to the game. Nothing more nothing less. I will never understand the fascination buying crowns or the crates. Especially since I've been through many game closures and seen everything go away.
Are some of the things on the store cool? yes, but I am the type of person who rarely changes my looks. To me the iphone is no different than a motorolla phone. Except the price. That being said I did buy a ConceptD Spatial Labs edition when it was on sale. I couldn't say no to a laptop with a 3D stereoscopic screen. Metaverse or no, I always wanted to make 3D stereo software, games, UI, models, etc. I just hated VR headsets because it disconnects me from the world around me. I have a tiny bit of paranoia. So that's why I think about how things might have happened so I can be ahead of the curve.
UPDATE.
So all went chill. He got his gold back, after revieving the removal.. They apologized and hes happy.
