Should ZOS remove gender restrictions on appearance collectibles?

I just purchased the "Cosmetic Pack: Adornments" for 1000 crowns and was kind of saddened that only 30 out of 119 items were even usable due to gender/race restrictions. What do you all think about this?

But yeah, male characters can already wear dresses and show cleavage, so it is idd that some items are restricted while others are not.
Regarding race restrictions, it usually makes sense because they tend to be very specific items such as khajiit manes or argonian horns. In which case the restrictions make more sense.

I think a ZOS developer replied to a prior thread about this a long while ago. If I remember correctly they said that old cosmetics were added to the game with gender restrictions because that was the design philosophy of the early development team.

However, that's changed in recent years and all new cosmetics can be worn by either gender. So this isn't something that happens anymore, and is only seen with old cosmetics.

It might be tempting to say that they should just go back to those old cosmetics and just enable the male version of them, but it's not quite that easy. They'd have to re-model the mesh so it fits on the male models of each race, as well as a host of other things I can't even think of right now. So doing that would take precious development time that could be spent elsewhere.

Khajiit and Argonian has other skulls so not all stuff fit them.
So some Khajiit only hairs is set up for Khajiit heads with holes for the ears so it would look stupid for other races.
For Argonians this is even more an issue.

Male / female as males can wear dresses why not, including beards.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Very good reply. The cosmetics were designed with specifics in place that would not be the case if they removed the restrictions. Probably more work than worth it for a 1k crown purchase. Great they are not working with these restrictions going forward.

But some new ones are still very dimorphic. The baker’s costume for male characters has pants, while the version for female characters has a long dress or skirt. “Women belong in dresses” is not a message that belongs in today’s world. With two versions of the costume like this, we should have access to both. I understand it may be a bit different with tops, since the rating boards of various countries clearly treat male and female exposure above the waist differently than pants vs dresses/skirts, but I don’t see a justifiable reason to keep female characters from wearing pants.

I had not noticed that though I would not suggest there should be multiple versions of the same cosmetic. One suffices and if they chose it to be pants then it would be pants for both genders just as a costume that is a dress would be a dress for both genders.

If I remember correctly it was said these items(which are quite old) are hard-coded and can't really be altered.

Newer cosmetics aren't restricted like this anymore, though! ;)

I feel like some people are letting their personal and political viewpoints show when they talk about not wanting to see another gender wearing anything different.

yet we have a game where players have disco ball cosmetics, massive puppy-like pets roaming alongside you into dangerous dungeons, and of course, summoning demonic pets in public towns.

Someone wearing a dress should be the least of anyone's concerns tbh. Don't let personal politics seep into this discussion please, it's not healthy and does not contribute to a healthy discussion.

No, wouldn't fit the lore of Elder Scrolls very well. That's all there is to it. You don't see men with flower crowns or tiaras in the universe of the Elder Scrolls, any in dresses are likely mad due to Sheogorath.

That would be fine with me as well. I would just ask for equal access to what they choose to offer.

You do realise one of the writers literally wrote in a Terminator cyborg from the future, right? (he even admitted he based it entirely off the Terminator lore).

Also playing into "madness" makes sense when we have Sheogorath in the games and lore, so you more or less just gave an excuse for wearing the opposite clothing.

I've never seen Sheorgorath wear a dress.

And opposite clothing... opposite to what?

    Yes please.

i wish old basegame collectibles would be changed to fit all characters.

and if not at least make sure everything new fits all characters, crown store facial hair is still exclusive which is odd.
facial hair isn't exclusive to men in real life.

Not sure what you mean by equal access. I hope that does not mean for every costume with a pair of pants that they make one with a skirt.

Heavy armor designs would be pants and most medium armor designs would likely be pants. That would leave costumes essentially forcing all light armor designs to be all pants and anything outside of an armor appearance to be mostly skirts. That is if things are to be one for one.

The focus of this thread is to not have items gender or race-locked. That means something with pants can go on both genders and all races just as something with a skirt should be unlocked for everyone as well. It does not mean we should have an equal number of feminine and masculine items available. Such limitations are not necessary.

They can certainly stand to do away with most of the current restrictions. Maybe not all, but most. Beards I kinda get because I don't really think the female character models are really designed to handle beards. A lot of the earrings and studs though I don't really get.

It's probably because the bone structures of male faces are different from a female's. And the bone structures of Orcs and Kjahiit and Argonian are different from they other races and from each other. They would not fit everyone well as they are now.

There are too many female hair styles that are long and there are not enough short ones.
