Finally pvp is playable, yesterday Cyrodiil was full, all 3 Alliances pop locked with +50 queues, Volendrung spawned and there was ZERO lag.
Big thumbs up, i hope it stays like this

Unfortunately, on PCNA performance degraded within a few months. It's still leagues better than before the refresh, but it did degrade- rather quickly at that.

I suspect PCNA performance degraded so quickly because word got out about the performance improvements and frustrated pvpers like me that quit took a break got wind of it and came back in droves, which loaded up the servers again.

Half a server's worth of bored soloers and the sweaties farming them probably doesn't put much strain on the servers, which is all that was left of the once-thriving Cyrodiil scene right before the infrastructure upgrade. Once all the highly-optimized ball groupers and aggressive zergers came back that's when we saw performance take a dip. Same thing will probably happen to EU, but 2 steps forward and 1 step back is still forward progress.

That theory gets a few holes poked in it when you consider that PvP guilds (at least all the PvP guilds I've been in) have seen a mass exodus of players leaving again - and Cyrodiil's performance is still back to being bad again.

Reiterating, performance is definitely MUCH better than it was, but it's sad to see that it degraded so quickly again, indicating there's still more work to be done.

That’s because you’re looking at it from your guilds’ perspective. PvP guilds have come and gone since the game first launched, with new ones popping up to take the place of ones that fade away. I have a chest in my player home full of tabards from old PvP guilds. NA/PC/GH currently has plenty of guild groups made up of a combination of a few long time players with a lot of newer ones. At the massive battle for Roebeck last night I counted at least 5 large, well-organized guild groups fighting there among the several dozens of solos.

The returning players are the ones that came back with the server upgrade and have organized the masses of casuals and soloers into new guild groups, often with new names, which has increased the server load to the point that we’re seeing performance issues again.

I really don’t see any other possible cause for server performance to go down again, with the exception of ZOS altering game code with new features or changing parameters, which is the opposite of what ZOS has said they’re doing with the code. Server drives and memory don’t just slow down for no reason.

@Marcus684 The argument might hold for EU but not for NA. The servers have been upgraded on NA for nearly a year now. It's not like the news *just* came out that they had been replaced and performance was better and so everyone decided to come back to NA. If anything I suspect there are fewer people on NA now that EU has seen improvements. It's pretty rare to see more than 1 campaign locked at any time and regardless of how many wish to play there are only so many that *can* specifically because of the population limits.

I was at Roe myself last night. That was just about the worst I've seen the NA servers before since the hardware upgrades. And yeah, there were a ton of ballgroups there to be sure. But even after I left that lag followed all over the map for nearly another hour. It's not like I haven't seen any of those groups in the last few months. It's not like I haven't even seen them in the same area. But that definitely fell below the bar of what I consider playable.

Just to be clear, even as bad as it was last night it was still better than before the refresh. But that gap seems to be shrinking a little bit each month...

Correct. I have noticed wait times becoming longer and lag becoming more frequent. So looks like it will happen again. >:D

I hear all of you & i hope zos is able to maintenan the upgraded servers, to fix it, rather then it was possible (or obviously not possible) with the old servers, to keep performance good/ improve it.
