is it commonplace to kick someone from a guild (not online/offline related) and not give any reason? i ask because one of the guilds im part of (and have since left) kicked irl friend of mine but never gave a reason. it was not inactivity. i know my friend. they are not the type to be rude, crude and unattractive to others. my concern is why should i continue to invest my time and effort for a guild that kicks people without any warnings or communication of any type. was my friend kicked because of something they said? if something was said that offended someone, don't people give a warning first and say dont do it again? with so much being lost in translation with text-based chat, i think more understanding and less punishment should be the standard. unfortunate, seeing as both of us were looking for a fresh start. guess we'll both go looking elsewhere.

Any guild can manage their roster in any way they choose. And any player can choose not to associate with guilds who don't meet their standards.

I also think that sometimes furthering conversation with someone you are removing can lead to more unfavorable outcomes than both parties just moving on.

It's possible it was an accident. Its quite easy, at least on console, to select the wrong option in a hurry and kick instead of, say, change rank or travel to player.

Try asking one of the officers about it. If it was accidental they can invite your friend back. Or if there was a reason for the kick and you don't agree with it then there's nothing stopping you from leaving.

perhaps a fair point. seems to me this avenue dismisses any real sense of etiquette. than again, this is just a video game and anyone can play if they pay. thx for the feedback.

No one can tell you why they did it except the guild leadership, so if you want to find out the reason you'll need to ask them. It's clearly bothering you or you wouldn't have made this topic, so I think it's worth asking the question, then you can decide how to follow it up based on the answer.

As someone else said it's up to each guild to decide how they want to run things (as long as they're not breaking the rules of the game) and that includes who to keep in the guild. In theory someone could make a guild where everyone gets kicked at the end of each day, or they pick a random time once a week and if you're not online or you don't mail the leader 1 lemon within 5 minutes you get kicked. It would be absurd and they'd have a very hard time recruiting and (in the second case) retaining members, but it would be allowed.

I know both the guilds I'm currently in will let players know why they were kicked, but they will only tell the player in question and at least once it was a very short message followed by reporting them for the things they said in guild chat and then blocking the player. It was a bit of a surprise for people who weren't online at the time, but everyone who was there agreed it was justified.

(I assume this isn't what happened to your friend, but some people seem to think because guild chat is 'private' the usual rules don't apply and they have free reign to say what they like to and about anyone.)

i was bothered by this. i had a negative experience with same guild my first week in it. we've been in and out of 2 other guilds so far because of leadership hypocracy (some folks can say whatever they want while others are reprimanded). might end up going back to duo play and just ignoring the rest of tamriel. even one bad apple can spoil the whole cart.

    p.s.
i miss you ac. yours was the absolute best guild i've ever been privileged to participate in.

Yes, it is commonplace. However, the reasons are usually given in the guild rules and bylaws, and not necessarily in personal messages or mails.

Everyone's pretty much covered it, and basically you'll have to ask the GM, IF they decide to tell you. Some handle all disciplinary actions on a need to know. It could have been an accident, broke a rule, a bad GM/officer who didn't like them, or anything else(I remember reading in zone once when a GM of a guild kicked someone they saw tbagging in cyro. Wasn't in the guild rules at the time but wasn't the image the GM wanted for their guild)
Your friend should contact someone if they truly don't know. As for whether you should stay, unless you make your own guild, any guild CAN kick you any time they please.

If the guild is a very popular one-- by which I mean their membership is right at or very close to the cap and they tend to have frequent requests from players who want to join-- then they might choose to kick an existing member in favor of a new one, often on the basis of activity-- i.e., whoever has the longest period of time since they were last online, even if it wasn't longer than whatever maximum allowed period of inactivity is stated in the guild's rules.

Note that playing in offline mode can cause problems in this respect, so if you're in a guild that does have a maximum allowed period of inactivity, it's best to go back into online mode-- if only for a bruef moment-- on a regular vasis so it doesn't look like you've been offline for too long.

i figured instead of making a new thread i'd conclude my thoughts here...
psa on some recent guild experiences

disclaimer: i am no longer guild member w/any of the guilds i had these experiences with. all of these occurred between november of last year and this last week. i am not trolling, baiting or being derogatory to any specific individual and/or group. i'm sharing my own experiences.

i advocate guild participation 100%. i've had some really good experiences running w/guilds. some moments have just made me cringe. i hope those in a guild leadership position read this. now if you're still reading...

    - i was on discord guild chat when someone new to guild asked a question about guild chat rooms; particularly which room to post w/e it was they wanted to post at that time. an answer was given immediately, which is where it should have stopped. so here's where i take umbrage. an officer began to talk about how obvious it was which room was which. there was some laughter. the noob in question defended themself by saying they were new to the game and to discord. i must have heard the word obvious a dozen more times while folks laughed. i am not exaggerating. poor leadership for mocking a noob.

    - i attended my first guild meeting (on discord) not long after joining it. i'd never bothered to invest the time in other games. i was curious. earlier that day i had posted in discord chat but it was the "wrong" chat room. during the meet one of the officers lectured the guild about posting in the correct rooms. i say lecture based on the tone of voice. i am not a child. poor leadership for the lecture.

    - guild message indicates if i want banked items all i gotta do is ask in discord. i ask. get ignored. ask again. get ignored. get what i asked for from rng god. stop asking. maybe that's why i was ignored? maybe all those banked items are for show. like that grocery store-front in the movie "the interview"? idk. poor leadership for fake bank.

    - in-game guild chat convo triggered an officer. upon informing us the topic was dropped by everyone, but the officer continued to inform us. pretty sure officer took it personally when i pointed out the topic had been dropped and the officer was the only one still chatting about it. poor leadership for thin skin.

i suppose there is enough new blood in the game that officers can behave this way and alienate players. for you folks out there looking for a guild, remember there are sooo many guilds in game. you don't have to stay a member just because you joined. it's tricky sometimes to know if the guild is good for you and it's ok to guild shop.

One thing to consider is lots of officers have the ability to kick someone. And the action may not be discussed among officers. We would sometimes talk about, other times not.

For the record I only kick for inactivity so we can let new ones in.
