When is 100% Success less than 100% Success?

Apparently when attempting to pick-pocket.

With today's daily endeavors, I headed to Daggerfall for some easy marks. I snuck up behind my target, waited for it to change from 95% success to 100% success and made my move. To my surprise, she turned and accosted me for rummaging through her pockets. For clarification, I was not spotted by a witness, nor was I challenged by a guard. My mark turned on me to chastise me.

The best I can figure is on the server it changed back to 95% success (then I failed the check) and it had not yet updated on my screen.

So, a word of warning to all the pickpockets out there, 100% success isn't guaranteed 100% of the time.

This happened to me in the lighthouse on the Daggerfall docks. It was definitely at 100% and I still got caught / chastised by Ember. I pickpocket a lot and this was the first time it's happened to me.

I've noticed this happen a few times. Its never resulted in dire consequences for me so I've just shrugged it off to it being eso. The same reason that the "trivial" lock in the prison in the tutorial took my fully levelled, 4 points in locksmith character 4 attempts to force open.

Yes, this is a bug as old as time. The displayed pickpocketing odds are not actually the pickpocketing odds. There are some ancient threads about the topic where people had done some investigating but nothing was ever done about it.

I just had 100% change to "pickpocket aware" after pressing x, looked like I failed but gave me credit for the pick in the endeavor and got loot in inventory but never showed on screen.
Client/server sync problems I bet.

I like to say that I'm such a mediocre pickpocket that I manage to fail a hit with 100% chances of success.

It would seem to me that this is probably a rounded value on display. The "real" value is probably something like 99.9%, so there's always that teeny tiny chance that you'll fail, despite the game telling you that you have 100% chance. Or there simply is something wrong on the code side which prevents you from ever effecitvely having 100% guaranteed, depsite saying so. It's a curious thing, if nothing else. I've heard other people say this as well, but never experienced it myself.

I've managed to fail a 95% pickpocket like 5 times in a row as a khajiit. I just stopped for the day. XD
