I really tire of Bastian's lame "quips" but I need a good tank companion and Mirri can't really hang.

Surprising observation. Between the two I've found Mirri better able to hang in there. It likey comes down to how Bastian and Mirri are equipped and spec'd out. I have both set up as healers to better help keep my health up, allowing me to focus a little more on offense. With this configuration, Bastian seems to go down more often than Mirri.

woulda been nice if they'd kept to having 1 male 1 female companion.. but.. I'm less concerned with their genders than their personalities and usefulness.
Afterall, they're not romancable so that part really doesn't matter so much. I just don't like the pseudo-"deep" "quips" Bastian repeats.
Someday I hope we get some Street Tough Nord or Orc tanky companion His personality can just be "unga bunga smash" That'll be good enough.

They may not be romancable but we spend a lot of time with them, and I much prefer a strong handsome male following me around.

Mirri works much better in this regard - but only because I have an add on that disables interacting with torchbugs and butterflies. As far as accidental theft, when my elf grabbed some red item by mistake, an NPC attacked her. Mirri instantly killed the NPC. Cost a big bounty but Mirri's steadfast loyalty is well worth it.

They need to have an option to turn off their comments completely.
I'm looking forward to the new companions, but yeah, getting tired of having to de-summon them every time I need to loot a thieves trove (in Bastian's case) or blade someone in the back.

You can always toggle off accidental looting in settings, the same way you can toggle off killing innocent NPCs.
But yeah, I feel you with that second point...
I'll always remember the blackwood outskirts, as I was sneaking through the imperial territory, a green bear dog appeared right in front of me but was unaware of my stealthy presence. And as I buffed up to the core, I prepared a burst, to which I aimed my "power of the light" on. However, as Bastian was getting ready, I looked in dismay to see that the magical spear of power did not appear on top of the bog dog, but instead, on an adorable little fur-ball. The Squirrel looked up and saw my spear slowly descending upon it, and then it looked back at me, as it dropped the acorn he was carrying, lying face down, it started back up at me with its tiny little black eyes. He squeaked, and I don't need to understand squirrel language to know exactly what it squeaked at me... He asked... "Why, Roman, why me?" And I couldn't stop the spear, it all happened in an instant, but that instant felt like an eternity to me, and to Bastian.
So when I turned around, trying to avoid the Squirrel's gaze as it got impaled by my spear, I could only see Bastian's judgmental gaze upon me. "That's wasteful!" He exclaimed right before he was brutally hauled back by the bog dog I originally intended to kill.
After Bastian's death, I've been adventuring with Mirri, waiting for Isobel to come and behave exactly like Bastian but in female.
