Do battle axes cause bleed damage or just more crit damage?

Reading some blogs and things from years prior and it seems like battle axes caused bleed damage, however the trait for the battle axe in the passive skills states it increases crit damage.

Wondering if this was changed awhile back?

Read the tooltip for 2H heavy weapons or DW twin blade blunt and they will tell you what axes do.

iirc, they used to cause bleads, hence bleed damage, but I think they increase damage done when you crit. Probably a more constant and controllable passive.

Axes and Battleaxes used to have a chance to cause bleed damage. That was removed and replaced with a bonus to extra crit damage and crit healing along with making some more skills deal bleed damage, which was limited to only three skills and one arena weapon before.
Bleed also used to ignore resistances and was considered physical damage (now it's considered martial damage, which wasn't a category yet back then).
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

With the now nerfed on crits does that make battle axes obsolete?

I'd say yes. Bonus crit damage is the least important thing you can get out of melee weapons now. 2H you'd want greatsword for plain weapon damage or maul if you're missing pen (which, given the state of stamina toons right now, you probably are). Dual wield it's just double daggers all the way.

The 2H skill line may have changed the perk that caused bleed damage-- I honestly don't remember how it used to be versus how it is now-- but I think there may be a CP perk that does this now. So I think battle axes can cause bleed damage, although I believe this has always hinged on your choices with regard to SPs and CPs. But I might be mistaken.

You are mistaken. It used to be that axes caused bleed damage, however the weapons' passives and Bleed itself were changed a while back.

Bleed now comes from certain skills (Carve, Twin Slashes, Bloodthirst, etc.) or proc sets (Aegis Caller, Pillar of Nirn and some others) and not tied to any weapon types or CPs. Only CP that affects bleed is that one passive star which I don't remember from the top of my head but it just boosts your damage from martial attacks.

Okay, I'm looking at the Warfare CP constellation, and I think it must have been the Mighty passive under Extended Might that I was thinking of. I don't see anything else that mentions Bleed Damage. You're right; I was mistaken.
