Thoughts: Pure Magic Damage Staves?

Curious on people's thoughts, on this. I think it would be a cool addition. Also more esthetically fitting for Sorcerer/Necromancer.

The whole existing skill trees would work.. just add magic damage abilities, instead of elemental.

#edit: also wondering if anyone knows a reason for this not already being a thing?

    I'm with you and I also think that would be cool. I thought It might be more likely to actually get into the game with a more simple change, though.

    I don't like being shoehorned into elemental damage as a Magicka user, tbh.

    I feel like ZOS might one day do it, since they wouldn't have to waste resources on designing new weapon styles, the ability icon can just copy/paste what is shown in game before picking a specific elemental staff, and like you said the abilities would essentially be the same just magical.

    As mentioned above, many classes would aesthetically make more sense if a pure magic damage weapon was added.

    In relation to why it has not happened yet, only ZOS could tell you, but it never hurts to brainstorm.

    1) Maybe ZOS is still unsure of how passives and unique morph effects would work with a magicka destro. For instance, a mag weapon could be at base stronger, but not benefit from passives. A mag weapon could have more inherent penetration (might be better to wear medium armor). A mag weapon could also be the weakest of them all, but have more unique effects attached to it. No matter what ZOS decides it'll be hard not to commit to a mag staff's identity. Of course, they could always revamp it down the line like vampire skills and ice staves.

    2) They want to actually introduce a new skill line (can still be a staff) or weapon type. This would be the coolest option imo, but would require the most effort from ZOS' end.

    3) Could simply be an aesthetic issue in relation to how the weapon abilities look. For instance, light/heavy attacks (beam or ball for heavies). Two beam destros lightning/magicka and two ball destros ice/fire makes more sense to me (excluding resto staff). The coloration of the ability might be the necro/warden turquoise/teal color we've seen in game.

    4) ZOS might already have it completed on their end, but they want to release it at a specific time. Warden and Necro were not something that just appeared out of the blue. These classes have been in development for years. If ZOS decided to start working on a mag weapon today I doubt we would see it ready for next year, but if they already have something in the works then it'll come out when they want it to come out (ex: 1handplusrune.png).

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

    Would prefer a new weapon type. Something smaller like wands/rods or even gloves. I hate that there is literally 1 weapon skin for magicka based users. If zos isn't going to expand the morph passsive system then just add more weapons.

    I'm all for it. It's definitely something I want for my magplar, who is already running Warmaiden's and all magic damage skills. The only thing I'm using that isn't magic damage is Wall of Elements. A pure magic staff would be great.
