Continuity went down the drain when ZOS decided to use the Companions to introduce expansions instead of using new characters.

It is even further broken when you consider that unless you do the "mysterious benefactor" breadcrumb quest you actually still have your soul right through the game even though many quests treat you as if you don't.

    So, what is the solution?

Should every new player & every new alt start in Coldharbour? And finishing main quest would be interlocked with completing an alliance campaing? And then before going to any other chapter, you must do whole Cadwell's Almanach. Every. Freaking. Province.

And of course to go for chapter & dlc you must do prologue and each chapter & dlc must be do in specific queue, like Morrowind-Summerset-CC, etc. Otherwise you wouldn't see any npc that shouldn't be there, cause game will lock them.

Or maybe... Everyone who want to RP could open a tree of quests on UESP and do them as they should be done and just ignore anything else?

Yes. It's the only thing that makes sense.
Players could still free-roam a large area. It's just that the quests would be portioned out.

Simples: Not use the companions to introduce expansions. It worked well enough for Morrowind and Wrothgar.

Criers or notices in towns and cities advertising for brave adventurers needed to rid Elswyr of a deadly menace (for example).

The Real Lyris Titanborn died in Coldharbour.
The Main Protagonist is just mentally insane.
MP is that person who runs around all over Tamriel to "save the world" by fighting massive dragons and ancient vampire clans etc. The locals can't see the things MP can but encourage MP to carry on with the madness. It's just easier that way.

One day the truth will be told to MP and Sheo will return to take MP to the Shivering Isles...
    🤣

Choice in video games? No, illusion. At least in main story.

My take on that is that you don't actually have your soul before doing the Main Quest, at least not in the normal sense (and no, I don't know what that means). That's why you're able to absorb the power of a skyshard during the new tutorial, and to better survive having your soul supposed ripped away from you during the beginning of the Main Quest. There's something different about you, or about your soul-- possibly something involving Meridia? Or maybe it's because the time loop and the way it lets different versions of the same key characters exist at the "same" time is somehow letting your soulless state "bleed through" into coexistent times, such that you seem to be soulless even before you've technically lost your soul?

Did you read any of the replies? There's been several solutions suggested already which don't involve restricting the order in which players can do the content.

    My personal favourites are:
    1) Use the phasing technology already in the game and used within quests to hide the NPCs until you start the quest through the collections menu or zone guide.
    2) Make the initial NPC a generic messenger rather than an important character who appears in multiple storylines so their appearence in town isn't a spoiler or immersion break. It could even be the same NPC giving all the quests, so there's less 'quest clutter' in towns.

There's been several other suggestions as well, but those are the ones I think would work best and have the least impact on player freedom.

If someone has just helped the prophet escape, leaving Lyris behind, and then sees Lyris elsewhere that is not an issue with changing the starting point in the game but that a second storyline involving here character is also available.
