I'm no hardware nor network engineer but I believe a structure big as ESO's would take at least a full day, wouldn't it?

Not if it's hosted on Amazon. You can get an expanded server and migration done very quickly depending on how it is setup and your agreement with them.

No idea who hosts ESO though.

Not if it's hosted on Amazon. You can get an expanded server and migration done very quickly depending on how it is setup and your agreement with them.

I suspect that Zenimax now being owned by Microsoft, the last place to host new servers would be Amazon.

I can't fathom why it's beyond the wit of ZoS (and other game manufacturers) to write their backend in such a way that it never needs offline maintenance. You don't see Amazon going offline for 6 hours every week for maintenance.

Well, actually I can fathom it. Amazon would lose tens of millions if it were offline for the length of time of an ESO maintenance. ZoS won't lose anything, because we're suckers and keep feeding them money despite the poor server uptime. Five 9s it ain't.

Okay. I didn't try to get on, but when I selected (clicked on) it in the launcher there was no popup about it being unavailable. This is two weeks after the PC EU data was copied over, so presumably it's switching back to the PC NA data today?

It is certainly unusual for every game server to be offline at the same time. However, I doubt they need to take all of them down across both data centers to do on-prem hardware updates to the game servers.

However, if they have a common network change, that is a different story. It is possible that they are switching ISP (CenturyLink?) or DDOS protection (Akamai) to something Microsoft supplied.

I think they are "self-hosted", so to speak. Whether Zenimax Media invested in a private data center or whether they rent floor space from someone is unknown. In the past, I have speculated that they lease space from Level 3 (now CenturyLink), since they have data center floor space in both cities that ESO is located in, and the routes to the ESO servers were served by Level 3 prior to Akamai getting involved.

Redundant hardware costs a lot of money, and they obviously wanted to invest that money somewhere else.

Also, Amazon is a cloud network, which is very much different than an ESO server.

I had the extra memory module for the ZX81, still have the book 'Programming in 16k'

Had to nail it to a bit of hardboard though or the memory module wobbled and crashed - after typing 'peek <address>' and 'poke <address>' for three hours - that was REALLY disheartening!

I will be happening. We will know when it does. They should milk this sort of change for all the PR they can squeeze out of it.

They did in a stream, one of the dev talking to Pete Hines mentioned they were getting new servers this year.

They said the new servers would not improve performance, so no, they're not going to say something about it since some people will still assume the game should run better with new equipment. And if the game somehow runs worse, which seems to be the case over time, I don't think they're going to publish a timeline in which players can point to a certain event being the culprit.

This year? Hmm i think i heard that in the past but im really positive and happy about this news finally we are getting new servers as Peter Hines stated.

Matt Firor and Gina Bruno both said it on the Blackwood reveal stream. I believe that was in January.

They have their launchers open. If you leave it open, it will automatically start to download the update once the server's back up. That's all that is.

They left the launcher open - it counts as "playing" to steam.
