Why did I start at Greymoor?

Soul Shriven
So uhh, I bought ESO recently with all the expansion packs except for Blackwood. I was expecting to start the Soulless One's story as a Soul Shriven but I started out in Greymoor's storyline. How do I start at the Coldharbour storyline?

Go to your starting city, there's a quest marker near the wayshrine to talk to someone who takes you to the original storyline.

You started in Greymoor because ZOS currently starts new characters in the most current Chapter they own. Which is Greymoor, for you.

To start the Coldharbor storyline, travel to a major city and talk to the Hooded Figure. For you, the closest city right now might be Solitude, but you can also wayshrine to the starter city of your alliance city in Auridon, Stonefalls, or Glenumbra, where the Hooded Figure will also appear.

New characters always start in the newest chapter you own. It's a silly idea, really. People have been asking for a 'choose start' option for years.

That info will soon be outdated. Once Blackwood is released, all characters will start in a new tutorial from which you then get to choose your starting location. One of the options will be the Soulshriven in Coldharbour one but all the chapter starts are also there.

Yep! I am waiting to start a new warden until blackwood drops. So i can start in the new tutorial and then play all content in order it was released. Ive never started a character in the OG story. Always Morrowind or later and had to port to where i wanted.

I didn't realize we knew yet how the "choose your starting location" is going to work. Is it confirmed that after the new tutorial we'll actually get to choose our starting storyline-- Wailing Prison in Coldharbour, Firemoth Island in Morrowind, etc.-- and not merely the zone we'd like to start in?

So is it going to be a generic starting area like WoW did with Shadowlands or are we going to get the choice of which tutorial we want?

Because if it's a generic one with no choice, well it had better be good because that's what we will be stuck with.
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

You get a generic tutorial, but then choose from a series of portals which will take you to different locations - your alliance's starting city, the other alliance's cities, or the chapter maps.

We don't know yet what that tutorial is like, but apparently it's designed to fit starting at any point in the game rather than putting you into a specific storyline.

Don't wait. Do the 'new' starting zone to get some gear as Coldharbour is stingy as all hell when it comes to that. When you get out of the tutorial, run to the wayshrine, port to Solitude and ignore the quest as you run into the city. Run into solitude and get met with the Hooded Figure immediately and bam!

This is how I like to start, as I can get leveling with a destruction staff early, as opposed to having to finish Coldharbour and cross my fingers I get one.

Depends if they change The Wailing Prison back to what it used to be like, when we all farmed the heck out of it for greens and opened every single one of the pots and chests in the last few rooms.

And there were a lot of them.

@Wataterp the links below are guides our guild put together to help with the Chronological Order of quest. There is one for the base game areas and one for the DLC's. They give information on where to locate the starting quest for each area.

It's confirmed that it's a new tutorial in Balfiera, and then you basically wayshrine to a zone of your choosing afterwards (chapter zones or starter areas), ending up where that tutorial would have spit you into the world. You don't get the old starting storylines, unfortunately.

Thanks. Yeah, that's more or less how I'd assumed it was going to work. I know a lot of people will be disappointed, but it is better than what we have now.

I'm assuming we can at least begin the Main Quest as we can now, by talking to the Hooded Figure. I guess I'll be finding out for myself come Monday. I can live without the Morrowind, Summerset, Elsweyr, and Greymoor tutorial quests, but the Wailing Prison quest is pretty crucial to the game's basic storyline.

I’m not sure what triggers them. I started a character in Greymoor and had been coming and going from Solitude and questing for a while when suddenly there she was when I entered by the main gate! It was kind of creepy, lol! But definitely you’ll want to go straight from Solitude to the starting city of your alliance if you want to do the Coldharbour questline first.

You do realize, if you have at least one character already, you can craft/buy/loot the items to set up your new character? Since I utterly detest starting skill lines I'm not planning on using, I make sure I have a set of gear in my bank. Since personal bank is account wide, and I have the banker assistant, my new alt gets the sword and shield, or dual weapons they'll use, instead of starting with a two hander she will never use again.

I didn't realize the hooded stranger and mysterious benefactor show up in Solitude. I thought it had to be the starting town for your faction, Davon''s Watch, Vulkhel Guard, or Daggerfall.

Hi. Not Solitude. The Hooded Figure will not appear in any of the DLC zones. One has to travel to a main city, or even a smaller city in the Main Game area to talk to her. I took a new character from DLC to DLC via wayshrine and never met the Hooded Figure. Once entered main area and approached a town, she appeared.
