I'm concerned about customization when it comes to Companion appearance and dyeing costumes.

I'm hoping we can get an answer for this.
Okay what they showed off today, is that it seems like the only custimization ability so far, is we can outfit them with the outfits system and the costumes system. However they did not answer if they could dye their outfits and costumes, nor did they show off how that works in the outfit station. Another big thing and its very disapointing to me is the lack of ability to choose various hairstyles for them. Now I understand the need for them to be their own people, and thus maybe not having full customization. Like Headmarkings and Tattoos, but hairstyles are very very important because one, if they are limited to just one hairstyle then everyone will have clones or the appearance of clones of various companions everywhere and having hairstyles for sure will allow customization to where many can do unique things with them. Within the limits of their default appearances.

I feel that Hairstyle section is vital and I feel that needs to be included and the fact that it seems not to be is very very disappointing to me.
I know we have to wait for Monday, but can we get an answer as to if we can dye said costumes and outfits like we can with a players?

Because companions have a storyline written for them.

It would be amazing to be able to change their hair. It would prevent the game from looking like there were too many clones of the same person running around, but also it would just be nice to implement.

I don't know about ESO, but a recent Q&A with Fallout 76 devs (yes, calm down, I said the words) said that the reason hairstyles and head markings are so limited is because they actually take a heavy toll on performance. Made me wonder about the performance here and if that has anything to do with it. If so, then why put more stress on it? Someone with actual code could maybe give some insight?

Since he mentioned that we will be creating their outfits at the outfit station, I don't see why dyes would be precluded. What I want to know is, will the companions be using our existing characters 10 outfit slots or will they be using their own.

Because of the way they said it on ESO Live, my expectation is that the outfits will by just like the character, complete with dyes.

I would not expect that costumes can be dyed, as this is an ESO Plus thing in the first place.

On the one hand it is understandable that you cannot modify the appearance of the companions 100%, as they are supposed to be unique characters. But please give us at least hairstyles, tattoos, headgear. I was already really excited about the companions, but the idea that Bastian and Mirri clones will soon be running around everywhere spoils everything for me as a roleplayer.

Consider that it works like any other time you have a quest companion

When you see another players companion you don’t see a copy of yours, you see a different person, with a different face and clothes.

I suspect it will be similar to that.

I don't know why they even wrote a backstory for them, why not let players fill in the blanks and do the roleplay? Do they really want an army of clones running around?

It did not sound that from the ESO live today. The dev said that they made the companions always show their head to retain their identity and that this was fixed, although their name would call them a "companion of .. the player". This does not sound like the look will be generic, but specific to what that character has chosen for them with the NPC head/hair.

I suppose we'll find out on Monday, as like other ESO live and ESO information posts in general there were many things left vague and unanswered.

A companion is still an NPC with its own script, so it makes sense that you can't alter their physical attributes other than what they wear.

Despite this, perhaps there's a chance someone will make a mod that allows players to fully customise a companion.

I've heard that they should be visible as they are designed, like bankers and co.

They are delivering a complete solution, and the companion personality and backstory influence how they respond in different situations.

If they player was doing this, most of the time the companions would stand there like a cardboard cutout, occasionally blurting out random meaningless phrases. They would be like the unvoiced companion mods for Skyrim.

This thought is in my mind, as well. I am not sure how much it really matters. Tamriel is filled with clones already. The body variations between NPCs, and even players, is not that wide. I think most of the female Breton NPCs in Glenumbra are sisters. Gear seems to define them more than body appearance, and we will be able to gear the companions uniquely.

Addons are limited. The companions are stored on the server and run from the server. What other players see when you trot past them with a companion in tow comes from the server. We can only make changes that have been specifically written into the game.
