PCNA demographics: Are there a lot of non-English speaking players?

Sometimes I encounter players who don't speak English in dungeons, and it can be frustrating for both me and them when we try to discuss the mechanics.

Are there a lot of non-English speaking players? If so, what language do they speak? I'm considering picking up another language recently, and I'm considering Spanish bc it seems to be the most used language in NA other than English. What's your experience regarding this issue?

There is only one way to know for sure: Close down the PC NA server, and see in what language players complain the most! :innocent:

French. There's quite a few Quebec guilds.

I'm in Canada and Spanish isn't even in the top five languages spoken here (yet most people I know speak it).

Gaming is a great way to learn imo. I had a guildie whose first language was Portuguese and she learned English by joining an English speaking guild.

Surprisingly, I haven't come across any Spanish speakers who didn't also speak English. I had someone ask me a question in Portuguese once, was able to get the answer across using Spanish. Other than that, I know some Japanese players play on NA, and I've seen Japanese text a time or two. There are several language specific zone chat options. I don't turn those on, so for all I know there is a community of French speaking players on NAPC.

Rarely in ESO did I get non english speakers in NA, but in WoW I would commonly get them in instances because spanish speakers were such a small population and got horrible queues it just merged them with ours. It might happen the same way here.

There's are several Quebec guilds?? That's awesome! I had no idea. I've been living in Montreal for 5 years now, and my French still sucks. Would love to join one of those guilds!

I'm not sure if you can search for language in the guild finder, but ESOAllianceQC is one of them, and I have seen ads in zone for other francophone guilds.

OP, there are also Japanese players that play on NA. You'll run into them more if you play later at night/Pacific time evening.

My Uncle has been married to a French woman and living in Quebec for over 30 years, still can't speak French but has acquired the accent. :D

But yeah, I often see them advertising their guilds when I'm doing surveys. Some of them are listed on here too https://www.eso-database.com/en/guild-finder/

There's a sizeable Japanese player base, that's probably who you're seeing.

Click the logo on your chat box, go to Options, select ALL 6 zone chats, and now you can see everyone who is on NA server.

The diversity of languages is huge on PC EU and also happens very often while being in a dungeon the other party members can not communicate or do not understand english, but in my experience the people who want to comunicate somehow with the group will do it and if the others are willing to somehow improvise and use google translator if needed, there is always a way to come to an agree ^^
The people who don't want to communicate/talk/learn will simply ignore no matter how hard you try.

I have encountered people speaking in French, Spanish, Japanese. Even one Russian, I used Google translate to communicate with.

Nothing stopping anyone on the EU server creating characters on the NA server, so probably as many languages being spoken in NA server as there are on the EU one just less common to run into them.

I remember tanking Crypt of Hearts 2 on Vet with a group of Spanish speaking players, only one of them could speak English, he was in one of my guilds and asked for a tank to help with a monster helm run, the dungeon took a lot longer than I expected it too but I didn't give up on the group, they were not bad as in not knowing mechanics just low DPS, we managed took about 2 hrs, they tipped me at the end.

I have my chars in the NA server since Mexico is geographically part of North America so is where we get the best performance.

I'm not playing at the moment so i don't know the exact number, but last time i checked our guild was ~500 Spanish speaking players, mostly from Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and in less numbers from other countries in South and Central America like Venezuela, Costa Rica etc.

Most of us can communicate in English, even if it is basic we can certainly understand mechanics and if you need certain item etc, reason is simple: TESO Isn't available in Spanish.

There is a great community driven translation named "Cervanteso" and some people that can't understand English is playing TESO thanks to that mod but they are a minority.

Most of the time we play together and communicate in Spanish, but when someone that doesn't speak Spanish get into the group we usually start communicating in both languages.

When we play alone we usually communicate in "English" and in fact it happens a lot that after meeting someone new we both speak English for like hours until we realize that we both are Spanish speakers lol.

If you happen to be in the situation where everyone is speaking Spanish just say that you don't understand, as I said before is unlikely they don't speak any English since the game isn't available in Spanish.

    Saludos, have fun.

I pug alot of dungeons and I don't think I've ever seen someone who cant speak enough english that it prevented us clearing. Some people just choose to ignore you or have chat turned off.

I usually have my chats turned off. But if the group wiped, I'd open my chats to see if they know the mechs. I

I've run PUGs on my healer or tank where the rest of the group would be using Japanese or Korean in the chat the whole time. I learned the Japanese characters that mean "chest" and "heavy sack" that way. LOL. And in PVP I've been in groups where there were Spanish speakers, usually from South America, who didn't really speak a lot of English. But I know Spanish so it wasn't an issue.

I'm multilingual myself and I live in a multilingual city, and the thing with monolingual Anglophones is they often assume everyone around them speaks English unless someone goes out of their way to inform the monolinguals otherwise. But a lot of people who aren't comfortable speaking English won't do that--they will just lay low. So those of you who think you're not running into players who can't speak English very well, you probably aren't noticing the ones who are staying quiet, or who are discreetly relying on a friend in game or on Discord to help them understand.
