So, every so often, threads appear on these forums suggesting something along the lines of opening up the classes and allowing player to pick and choose their skill lines. While I disagree with those suggestions, I can often agree with the desires for such an option: choices.
In ESO currently, we essentially pick from 6 different themes for our characters, where each theme dictates the visuals in conjunction with the way that option plays out. If I want to be a fire-mage, I pretty much have to pick MagDK, and as such have to deal with the play-style of MagDKs as well. Being a ranged fire-mage is almost off the table in this regard. Or, maybe I like the way my Templar plays, but I'm growing tired of the light theme. Just maybe, I'd like to wield a spear of shadows for a change. The current system bind our choice of theme to the choice of play-style. It's not inherently bad... but perhaps it could be better.
What if, when after leveling all the skill lines in a class to max level, we then unlocked the ability to apply the "skin" of that class to any of the other classes? So, if I leveled my Templar up to 50 in all 3 skills, then I could apply the Templar "skin" to another class like Sorcerer. It wouldn't change much in terms of function of skills, except for replacing certain thematic elements with more appropriate ones (eg. replacing Lightning Damage with Magic Damage, or in a DK "skin" case, replacing the Twilight with a Flame Atronach and the Storm one with an Iron one). Most of the changes would be in altering the visuals. So rather than lightning, purple magic, and dark crystals, the skin would change the visuals to be light, golden magic, and golden shards. This would also keep certain class-specific mechanic to those classes only. So putting a Nightblade skin on a DK wouldn't suddenly mean you'd have a DK which could become invisible. No. But you would have a DK with a shadow whip instead of flame.
On the one hand, this would allow people to play the way they want with the theme they want—a win in that department. ZOS could even sell access to these skins in the crown store, so a win for them too!
But, on the other hand, there is a huge case that people would end up playing one class, thus ruining diversity. But, hey, if everyone is playing one class, then ZOS might get the message to fix the others.
Thoughts? I haven't quite made up my mind regarding it, and am curious what you all think.
