Seriously, I love the outfit system in this game. Very diverse.....but if there is on thing leading me to just pick a costume and call it a day it's these damn FLAPS!..STOP!

First of all... LOL!

While I agree, some things look better without them which is why there should be a toggle setting like Hide helmet. The thing that really bothers me most is the Hip pads and this has all been made known to anyone paying attention on Forums several times over.

I just don't get it the fascination with flaps. Like I think it was the idea of one of the art developers and he/she is just refusing to remove it out of spite now. He/She was not expecting the hatred for these inexplicable creations as the result of some ridiculous dare to see how far you can annoy the base. So now, they are like you know...YOU GET A FLAP AND YOU GET A FLAP...OH AND YOU IN THE BACK..YOU GET A FLAP. That will show them to complain about my art style.

Flappy bats are clearly far superior to flappy armors.
But regarding the OP on a more serious note, I think many armors look better with a flap. The butt and thigh geometry of some of them looks truly terrible, especially to some bulky chestpieces we got... so... a flap at least hides how bland and unattractive many armor legs are.

And what makes the entire thing worse is the fact that the flaps clip into a lot of skirts and trousers. Almost every chest style clips with mazzatun legs for example.
Add to that the fact that most armour styles come with those awful tassets (sometimes they aren't even attached to the armour and just hover mid air) and you have only a handful of styles that aren't annoying the *** out of you. xD

I wish the flaps on the sides were a bit tighter. Some of them just flap about in the air as if not attached to anything. Nothing worse than loose flaps! How does that protect?

ZOS is not willing to admit that 90% of the client side lag in the game is due to rendering and shadowing all the flippety flaps and hip pads.

Came here to defend my twilight princess even though she drives me up the wall flapping in my face all the time, instead joy! Yes stop with the ugly clipping flaps. I acknowledge crotch flaps are necessary to some degree, some of those pants are tight and I wouldn't want to be out in public with a camel-toe! But they're unecessarily huge and the floating hip things, why?? Even on cloth robes, huge floating metal hip flaps totally ignoring all the laws of gravity! I mean try stapling a slab of iron to a silk skirt and see what happens. Ruins my immurshun tbh.

It's cheaper to just repaint/texture some old flapped set vs. a complete redesign and retest.

The other thing I have to say is that IF there are going to be present, then by all the Aedra have them both front and back.

The "one side only" ones look really.... weird.

A strange bib, or a wardrobe malfunction cover...it's just not okay.
