How does the fight work for the last boss now?

Foefaller✭✭✭Are you talking about the Lunar Phase? AFAIK it's always been a thing, but a normal trial group with a high enough dps can force the boss into the execute phase before it can happen.
There is also a mechanic where a couple dps have to go through a portal to find and kill shadows to stop an eventual party wipe. Also always been a thing, but normally a thing that recieves very little interaction from the rest of the group, so it might have been something you were unaware was going on.
