MagSorc pre-trial gear

I am using an old build but tried switching to Alcast "Mystic" build. Didn't seem to do much better. What is the best gear set up for someone who hasn't done trials yet? I have all the staves and most sets in the bank except Zaan.

The last thing you should do is wildly overthink your gear before getting trial pieces sorted out. Damage in this game for better or worse comes down to your rotation and your ability to execute it.

You are talking probably 2-3k deviation at most from any standard combination of the obvious sets. Because you are talking about trial gear, I will assume this is PVE DPS, and I will assume magic because you metion Zaan.

The most common non-trial set you see is Mother's Sorrow in any type end game raid, so probably where I would start. You could pair with Julianos and do just fine. That is far and away the easiest choice to obtain, and will work until you get your False God, which realistically, is what you will use as a trial set for the vast majority of PVE content. For monster sets, again 1-2K DPS between them at most. Ilambris is a sorc classic. Maw is pretty strong this patch. Valkyn Skoria or Grothdar will work as well. Domihaus is also nice if you are able to keep the buff going, especially because your spell damage will prob be a bit low. Zaan is great when you get put your nose on the boss or for a target dummy, but it is situational.

There certainly might be, but it would be much closer to option 2 than to option 1. New Moon Acolyte (another crafted set) is almost certainly more DPS, but my guess is you would run into sustain issues (it comes with a 5% cost increase), especially outside of an organized raid or if you arent at the CP cap. I think when learning it is more important to focus on your rotation. There is always a gut reaction that gear is the most important part, when its just not, no matter how many was you slice it.

The real thing you are after with a trial set is the 3 piece minor slayer bonus. Yes the 5 piece bonuses are powerful (which is why some trial sets are better than others), but the 3 piece is really important and doesnt come from anywhere outside a trial.

Mother's Sorrow is meta because of the shadow mundus stone. As long as that is the case, MS is a safe choice.

In terms of monster sets, farm them all. I true end game player is going to swap monster sets constantly throughout a trial. They are all situational as to which one is best.

Petsorc with Necro + MS is a very powerful setup for non-trials gear. Necro body pieces, which is what you want, are cheap and widely available from guild traders. Spell Strategist is another strong set, though I don't know what you'd pair it with in terms of non-trials gear. Maybe Julianos. Seen some wear War Maiden, but I have no personal experience with it.

If you can do vet COA2, you can do normal Sunspire. Normal False Gods is fantastic and easy to pug farm. Go for body pieces.

Yep. The reason I didnt suggest necro is that its a stop gap, its all light armor, which makes monster sets more of an issue (but they will be anyway with trial gear), and not everyone wants to run pets (even though they should on a DPS mag sorc).

100% with you on normal FG. Perfected version is nice, but normal FG is still better than anything else we are talking about here. It's really just not that hard to get. One or two runs in a generous group would probably get you everything you need. I decon normal FG stuff as do most people I know.
