I understand it is the luck of the draw, but can we get some visual hints? Not a guarantee, but just a way to avoid wasting most of the time looking at a useless bookshelf, likely one we have seen 8 times already.

I would love for something like this. Maybe a shimmer or light glow, like with lore books. I don't mind if the shelf doesn't have anything skill wise, but I just want to know if there's any new text in the shelf. I like collecting the books for the sake of collecting. =/ But its hard to know if you've 'collected' the unmarked.

It’s not a bad idea, and would be especially helpful in places that have many bookshelves to look through.

I would argue that it's a bad idea.. then people would only activate the items that give them something they WANT.. your miss out on funny lore that way..

Visual hints destroy exploration and new discoveries, @FlopsyPrince ... which is part of “Adventuring 101”.

If you want a sure fire way of leveling up skills, what would happen if you actually used those skills to level them up?

I'd just be happy with something to 'disable' a shelf I've already clicked on that hasn't "reloaded" yet.

    Nah.

I mean, what's next, makr the crown crate rolls before you buy? Or mark the critters that drop something good? Mark the days you will get a motiv page on your daily before you start?

    I mean, come on...

IF they should mark something for convenience sake, it might be all the recipes and motiv pages... add some "haven't learned that one yet" visual clue to the list -JUST- like they did with items which trait a character has not yer researched, THAT would really make thinghs easier when sorting through banks or crown store offers...

Isn’t the whole point of these things is to reward you for taking the time to search for those kind of books?

You don't advance the Mages Guild skill line by doing or using magic, it's all about finding lore books in the world.

Depends on how many lorebooks you've collected. If you have a lot, the odds you'll get something new go against you. For others...the bookshelves may not be so empty.

I think a better idea would be to tell you which book cases had a book you hadn't read yet. Maybe where it says 'read' on your screen, have a green dot for ones you haven't read yet and a red dot on ones you have. That way you'd know which shelves to click on.

    [Snip]

I have clicked on likely 1000s of bookshelves over all my alts. I typically ignore them now because the odds of getting anything useful is so low.

Comparing some visual clue to wanting lots of free crowns or such is [Snip]

I want a reason to check something out. Even a low chance of getting something useful would be better than the current state of being able to click on almost every bookshelf in a delve and get NOTHING new.

    [Snip]

And no, it doesn't help "lore" when I stop clicking on them because they are worthless 99.99% of the time.

From my experience these book shelves are not random, but contain a raise of a specific skill for a certain level range of that said skill. if you are still in that range and haven't used that bookshelf before, you get the increase, otherwise you don't. So especially with a lot of characters I have an idea where i could get a skill raise for said character - maybe i have just a good memory or maybe it is because I have done most of it more than 10 times, but this works for me without any add-ons.

That is why I want some visual clue to check out the bookshelf. Not 100% to keep it somewhat random, but not the 1% or less it seems to be now.

Something to make it worthwhile looking at bookshelf. I do not keep track of which ones I opened, but I might scour around on my main at least with something like this.

It is different for any of your characters there is nothing random in this process - if you open a bookshelf with a certain skill (and this skill will always be the same in that said bookshelf) it is basically a comparison between the max skill level where you can still get the raise and your skill level - if you are above it, you get nothing. I have done this in certain locations with all of my 14 characters and could clearly see that this is reliable.

I don’t follow the arguments against this. The game already does show a visual glow on loose unread lore items scattered around the zones. Unless I am misreading the concept, Flopsy seems to be suggesting that glow be added to bookshelves that contain a piece of unread lore as well.

Complaining that this would ruin the sense of exploration in this game is silly, while we have big quest markers showing where to go all the time. I run alts through main zone quests for skill points all the time, and easily complete them without having any idea whatsoever of what is going on in the quest...

    I agree Gundug.

    Lysette,

The sheer number of useless bookcases makes it unlikely to keep trying every one in every location.

I like the idea of marking it like unlearned lorebooks, but I could live with a lower percentage, say 25% of the marked bookcases had something useful.
