keep what we have now, add in more customization and quality of life.

example of all 3 changes and options:


pick race;
-Altmer,
passive, highborn

-Argonain,
passive, amphibian

-Bosmer,
passive, acrobat

-etc.


pick lifestyle:
-Alchemist,
passive, bonus magicka, bonus potion effectiveness, bonus max health, bonus disease and poison resistance, bonus healing done

-Hunter,
passive, bonus max health, bonus stam regen, bonus poison resistance and poison status immunity, bonus move speed and pen after roll dodge

-Wanderer
passive, bonus max magicka and stamina, bonus flame resistance and burning status immunity, bonus weapon and spell damage.

-etc.


pick the last thing you remember:

-I was captured by cultists
original coldharbor start and tutorial

-I was on a boat destined for vvardenfell
morrowind start and tutorial

-I was invited to summerset
summerset start and tutorial

-I was traveling the sands of elsweyr
elsweyr start and tutorial

yes lets design the game around being vaguely okay-ish compared to the competition and settle for "adequate"

Why compare to a decades old game though? I'd gladly welcome more customization. Specially more hairstyles, skin and eye colors.

Imagine at the start of ESO you get asked a bunch of personality test questions and then depending on your answers you get a class and race combination asigned. Just like in Morrowind's personality test or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

my example and idea was limited to splitting races from core mechanical passives, and reintroducing the tutorial levels that ZOS has created but replaced as new ones come out. (all stuff currently in the game, nothing new, and of purely beneficial nature, in fact the tutorial option is based on one of the most popular mods for mainline TES games)

yeah I liked the start another life mod for TES games personally. they need to do better on their class selection screen to be honest, as the examples are vague and sometimes completely un related to the actual class skills.

something like a short video loop of some of the class signature skills as a preview would be great.

No. i like this game in its current state when it comes with character creation.

As I make characters with a story in mind they often don't have optimal race for their class and I would love to separate bonuses from races. I'd even say, given how ESO works, let all race passives be mostly flavor (like reduced lava damage or increased swimming speed)
And a big YES to picking tutorial!

It goes something like this.

The players who aggressively defend racial passives have created all of their characters with the "right" race to maximise their stats.

Accordingly they feel POWERFUL.

They love the idea of others players not choosing the "right" race and meeting them in pvp where they can be DOMINATED with their RACIAL SUPREMACY.

Anyway, it’s done differently, it’s doubtful these would lead to pointless side quests about a family you never signed up for your character having.

I was very disappointed that ESO ended the TES tradition of "the anonymous prisoner" with all their new tutorials. I liked the old one best by far.

Right but that tutorial is gone now, replaced with goofy stuff to hype the latest expansion.

But I like the op's idea of adding some flavor & lore to the character building.

I've asked for something like "lifestyle" (except it would be *background*) for quite a while. ESO has never had strong RPG elements, and Bethesda has been watering down the RPG in their RPGs over time, but it sure would be nice to see a reversal of that trend. Especially now, as proper RPGs are having a resurgence.
