What happened to the combat? It feels awful

Re-downloaded the game today to essentially give ownership of my guild to my buddy so he can turn it into a trading guild and I decided to play around with my character to see if I notice any changes since I've been gone for 9 months and combat feels so slow. Reserve Slice doesn't feel as instant or clean, poison injection doesn't weave as nicely, and yeah that delay for incap is hot garbage.

I know they intentionally ruined incap, but what's up with the other abilities? Usually when you log into a game after a long time the devs improve the game. It definitely feels worse.

Zos did their "Performance" Patch which led to crashing every few minutes while in cyro in week 1. They fixed the crashing but now not only PvP but also Dungeons and Trials have bad Performance and a lot of desyncs. In some instances it gets so delayed that a mini boss that is supposed to spawn at 90% main boss Health spawns at 75% instead. Anniversary Event coupled with a free to Play Event really doesnt help the already screwed Server either.

This doesn't feel lag related. I used to be able to block/bash cancel my reverse slice and now I have to watch the full animation. It doesn't feel as fast or as satisfying.

ZOS is messing with core gameplay mechanics to “help reduce server load”. However, just as with their animation overhaul years ago which made all animations choppy, whenever this team touches something it comes out feeling worse.

There’s a few things at play:
    • Blocking was changed recently and is now significantly less reactive. They reworked it aka made it clunky too. Furthermore, some skills can no longer be block cancelled while others still can - it’s random. No one likes it because it feels slow and clunky.
    • Game performance is far worse. Also desyncs are far worse - an npc or player on your screen is actually somewhere else on the server, so you need to be directly on someone to land a hit sometimes. There’s a hilarious video around here of a dude spamming Shield Charge for over 30 seconds, closing the gap tons of times, but not actually hitting the target even once.

ESO has become awful PvP-wise and I highly recommend playing a different game for that type of content. Devs in other games actually support their PvP. Even PvE is experiencing all sorts of issues too. As a console player I had never had any performance issue in dungeons before prior to Summerset and trials only suffered from fps drops. Now I can run Sunspire on Vet HM and after coming back from portals on last boss, take 30sec+ to see adds spawning in (usually only a generous 10sec+).

Yeah I've been playing other games. I just decided to kill a few adds since I was logging in anyways and yeah I think I'm going to continue playing other games for a while more. I hope they revert whatever they did that messed it up.

Practically anyone who has played the game in a patch from pre-Morrowind knows how fast-paced and fluid ESO combat used to feel. I wish we could go back to those times.

If were being realistic, this game will never be fixed as we all hoped.

What are we even paying for? What is PTS for? Why do they keep trying to nerf us instead of working on their servers first? Why do they keep releasing new sets if they already have so many unbalanced/buggy sets? So many unanswered questions..

And it’s not just combat. The /reloadui are your new best friend. You’ll be typing that more than you’ll get lucky with your skills. The oldest zones are filled with glitches, trials, dungeons, delves also. Monsters not doing as they should. Walls not filled. Texture not loading, skins not loading. Speed run can get character stuck in running without moving. Sudden loading screens. Often followed by crash to login and the “u can’t login cause u all ready are”. At least they removed the “u sure u turned internets on?”

It feels as if I forgot something and on the other hand, it seems overwhelming with the amount of (in lack of better word) flaws we are experiencing right now.

    And then Greymore hits us........

The game is pretty much slowed down, seems to have been the trend for quite some time to be honest. And then there’s performance issues on top of that amplifying it.

I have to admit, I just came back to the game after a pretty long hiatus and things don't feel as smooth. For some reason I have to stop pressing everything for a second before winding up a heavy attack, or my character just stands there like a goof ball.
I remember a time where you'd press a button and it would actually do something. Now I press and hope for the best.

As others have posted ZOS changed the combat mechanics and basically ruined the game. They have yet to fix the buggy mess they created.

Skills don't always work, desyncs happen a lot, blocking doesn't always work. It truly is a mess atm.

My theory, albeit paradox, is that ZoS wants to destroy ESO for some reason. Everything they do, both regarding combat balance and performance is aimed at annoying and discouraging their players and taking fun out of the game.

I have no clue why they do it. I guess it is the vengeful spirit of Wrobel haunting the studio.

No they don’t want to destroy their game. Passion and money (mainly money) are the two primary incentives for making a game. If we take a look at what’s happened the past 3 years:
    • All skills became homogenized. The least fun method of balancing, but also the easiest method to maintain. This is what the game has transitioned to the past year especially.
    • Game performance is at an all-time low
    • PvP is utterly awful and barely has players
    • There is very little communication from the Devs. It’s at the point where they have a really bad reputation amongst their playerbase
    • The Crown Store is being updated more consistently than ever and is very well maintained.

They do not want ESO to die. The goal is purely to get as much money as they can with minimal effort and costs. That’s where we are right now.

Yes, ESO would have made them significantly more money if they spent the time and invested the money to support the game better. They would’ve kept that huge population of players who have quit since Morrowind. That’s in the past though.... atm they are doing a pretty great job in the context of making money while minimizing effort, time, and costs.

I usually hide in the Imperial City, far away from the sorrows of the world.
Because of the anniversary event, I have started doing Cyrodiil village quests. And oh dear, all those delays and every 3 meters we run into loading screens, even far away from any battle.

The situation is very dire and desolate. I now understand what everyone is complaining about.
Courage to all of you who somehow manage to make due with these lags and problems in Cyrodiil. Your will and loyalty is so strong. They could make you all so happy by fixing this.

What do you expect with 2 limited hotbars and a weapon swap system where you have to.....swamp to the same weapon? It's shallow. The rest of the game compensates for it though.

Yes this is very annoying. Seem to have this issue on some classes/skills but not others. It only ever happens in group content too so not the most satisfying experience when your dps starts plummeting because misfires mess up your rotation.

It was really bad in Cyro so I stopped playing. Now I see it in BGs too. Hopefully there’s a fix incoming.

I have noticed some changes and my Dragonknight character is doing much worse than she used too.

I went into a Group level dungeon. I have done this before with my Dragonknight and I had got to the point where I fought the boss at the end to a draw. Yes a draw all by my lonesome but the spider had pushed me to a point it could not damage me and I could not damage it. I was there for a book about half way down the dungeon and I figured no problem. Yesterday I never got pass the first group of spiders. I was slaughtered so quickly I realized that the performance of my character had been dramatically changed for the worse and it was not my imagination.

@Dracane Oh I don’t bother going into PvP now. Also our previous posts have mysteriously vanished and for obvious reasons it’s best to not directly quote (hint) more popular comments get deleted once the thread calms down. It’s a heavily edited forums we’re writing on rn. My account for example has lost 8 comments in the last 3 days - the comments left are almost only the ones unrelated to their game’s performance.

Could have sworn I replied to this thread already to comment that I've also had problems, particularly on necro, with having to mash skill buttons 3-4 times to make them fire. I guess I either imagined replying in my head or I did reply and it got deleted because apparently agreeing with someone that you've also noticed a bug is somehow unconstructive. Oh well, I'll screenshot this time to make sure I did actually post and then wait to see if they delete it again.

I thought this was just me. I've heard all the excuses about people in the trial, server load in Cyrodiil, blah blah blah. Did a dummy parse yesterday just to see what happens there. Forget it. At one point, none of my skills were firing on the back bar. Good times.

I'm playing on PS4 and noticed a lot of skills trip over each other and then seemingly come out together all at once. Console controls need a bit of tuning anyways, but it's even clunkier now. Some skills like the reverse swing, flurry, etc. all have longer animations and I find any skill fired around their execution doesn't fire smoothly. There's times where my weapons don't even trigger, let alone my skills. I'm putting in support tickets when I find this happening.

I'm honestly regretting buying the crowns I did when this overhaul actively made the game worse.
