That doesn't make it "depends". Then "Apprentice Crafting Harvester" is hardest to obtain if I don't harvest any resource nodes.

Contraband Violet falls into the category of extremely grindy Achievement dyes, similar to Grand Overlord's Brass in PVP.

The other metric of difficulty is stuff that's just plain hard to accomplish for most players, like becoming getting Ruby Throne Red for becoming Emperor

It's definitely not contraband violet as it's just "time consuming" not "hard".

I'd probably go between Ruby Throne Red since you'll need a dedicated group at the very start of the campaign to get it for you; that's the easiest method. Otherwise you can just play normally in Cyrodiil and hope it happens.

Voidstone Violet as it kinda requires a perfect storm only one guy per group has to screw up to ruin the run so it can be aggravating.

And I guess Aetherial Blue can be aggravating to get as it requires good timing and a perfect storm if you aren't active in PvP.

contraband violet isn't hard. you can literally do it on a naked character fresh out of tutorial. you have to be patient and consistent yes, but its not hard. just time consuming.

I find the Slaughterfish Pink the worst one. Others might take more time, but at least you are doing something instead of standing in place fishing. Its like spending twice the time you would normally spend for anything else. Uncle Sheo would promptly yell: BoOoOooriiiing! Hah!

I'd say contraband violet is pretty easy, especially if you do a lot of stealing. It just takes a little bit of time.

There are way harder dyes to get and many which are much more time consuming, like the fishing and last bunch of PvP rank ones.

I have to agree with other people. anything rng related is much harder then contraband violet. i mean sure you can claim that rng decides what kind of treasures you get, but at least no matter what you are STILL making progress. meanwhile.... most of the trophy dyes... you know those achievements where you get various monster trophies. you can go YEARS farming various chitinous creatures for example and still never get chitin accumulator completed for that mudcrab maroon. with contraband violet. if you steal every day? you will get it soon enough.

and then.. there are dyes that require coordination, timing and just high performance from not one, but a full team of players...

For the hardest achieve I'd say either PvP toprank or the fishing one. Both require long grinding, but at least PvP isn't that boring lol. So yeah, fishing it is.

I'm still missing most of those trophy ones. Have farmed so many mudcrabs without a sight of the trophy.

It's ridiculous they count as common dyes.

I didn't have any trouble at all with most of the fishing. I spent about 4 months in 2019 getting Master Angler on 4 characters - 1 each on each of 2 accounts, on both PC megaservers. I had some issues with (in general) one last blue in many zones. But that dye wasn't difficult - not to mention I don't DO pink anyway!

The ones I'll never get are those that require a lot of grinding, killing, or pvp. I'm not going to agonize over - or put myself through agony for - them.

@NotaDaedraWorshipper If you have killed a LOT of a mob that should be dropping a trophy and aren't seeing it, check to see if anyone else is having the same issue and if they are bug report it. I killed a couple thousand Flesh atros for my last one and still didn't get it to drop, ranted in zone and was informed that it was bugged and not dropping...

If it isn't bugged and you have been focused on killing mobs in one area, try different areas. Mudcrabs are at least all over the place!

In regards to the OP's question:

Dyes you can obtain alone, even if they take a very long time, I wouldn't consider the "hardest" to get. You only need yourself and time to do it. They can be very annoying as mentioned above, but that doesn't make them "hard".

The dyes I most unlikely to unlock are the PvP related ones since I don't enjoy PvP much.

Hardest dyes to unlock would be:

Ruby Throne Red: Become Emperor: this seems to be accomplished most often by guilds or groups of friends focused on doing it. So it requires a team of dedicated players to obtain it for a player (and you probably do this repeatedly to obtain the achievement/dye for everyone else in the group as well)

The Veteran DLC Dungeon Delver Achievements (complete both DLC dungeons in an Update on veteran mode): the veteran DLC dungeons tend to be quite challenging for most players, pugs can have a LOT of trouble beating them, so best done with a team of friends/guildies. Any achievement that needs a group to complete adds extra difficulty over solo achievements.

Stalhrim Chrome: Wolfhunter
Nacreous Purple: Dragon Bones

I don't know about NOW but back when I did Dragonstar Arena Conqueror (clear on veteran difficulty, 5/17/2015) it was brutal and took our group ages to learn each stage and then consistently get back to the current stage we were learning. I really burnt out on it lol.
Adamantine Silver from that one. It might not be as much of a challenge now though, I can't say I have been back


TL:DR If a dye achievement requires the skill and cooperation of others to complete it is "harder" than any of the time-consuming solo ones

So glad I got it at last On some fabrics/leather it can look a bit plastic'y, but on most it looks great, and it also has a little bit of a blue iridescence to it - WORTH the pain haha

I do, it's VERY nice, a very pale shimmering gold. (The addon Destinations, or Map Pins can help you find it if you're on PC)
It's a nice achievement to get alongside harvesting everything in sight looking for the dear kitteh

I pretty much agree. The one for grandmaster crafter takes a long time if you are starting out as well.

Definitely isn't Contraband Violet, for me, as I got that after less than 6 months.

The one that is impossible, for me, is Slaughterfish Pink.

As I don't PVP here and even if I did, I wouldn't fish in PVP zones.

That dye is very much middle of the pack as far as difficulty and grinding goes. It's nowhere near the hardest one.

Troll's Fur Brown from Monstrous Component Collector has a lot more RNG and time to get. Then you have the Grand Overlord dye which takes a ton of time to get. Or Emperor Dye which requires a lot of work or networking with ppl. Then there's all the vet trial and dungeon ones that requires skill and a good team. Or the Master Angler Dye.
