I'm not sure where to post this, but in your opinion, is sexism really rampant in eso?

so tonight, rather a rather hostile player has verbally insulted me because I'm apparently sexist for making a reference to the '*sigh* not another distraction' some npcs will say.
apparently I'm all that's wrong with eso and I'm a vile plague that doesnt respect women. so, it has gotten me thinking, is sexism in eso as rampant as this person has claimed?

thanks for anyone's input on this matter

No. Elitist 6 year old neckbeards who send hate tells for not using the "One true build" or not having maelstrom bow, or who blame you for "not healing" when they refuse to do mechanics and die becuase of it are a far greater issue.
Edited by dazee on March 1, 2020 10:57PM
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

I thought so, thankyou for your input, I found it to be a fresh look at things.

I've never encountered or really seen it to be honest. I know quite a few of my guild members that are women that have never encountered anything like this either. Now that doesn't mean they don't get mean tells when they mess up in a dungeon or beat up someone in PVP, but its not generally aimed at them for being women. Every game has its trolls but they don't make up the majority of a game's player base.

LOL. Some people will blow any comment way out of proportion, especially if they're a SJW on top of it. Just ignore and move on, can't say I've ever really had any issues with sexism other then little stuff one would normally expect in any MMO with so many people of varying views, values, beliefs, ect....

Eh, it's a finicky world. Haven't had anything like that happen in any game (as of yet - thankfully). But out in the real world, been berated by randos for cultural appropriation of urban youths while being a traitor to my gender for following the patriarchy. Was simply teaching my daughters ASL (American Sign Language) so they can communicate with me easier.

So, if that can get random strangers in a tissyfit, not surprised by what the op may have had to endure.

Just yesterday or maybe the day before, there was someone in zone chat making tired old jokes about women not being able to drive.

But that's not super common and probably less common than offensive zone chat targeting other groups. No other example of sexism springs immediately to mind.

In my experience yes. The second certain people found out I was a woman they started making sexist hate tells. They switched from normal salty tells to flat out sexist ones.

The Devs and lore writers generally take a rather mature approach to gender and sexuality. They usually succeed in presenting far more positive examples than they do in having negative examples.

For example, I'm not thrilled by the pair of Lady Laurent and Stibbons, even though I recognize the stereotype of noble buffoon/competent servant they are meant to lampoon. That brand of comedy just doesn't appeal to me.

In contrast, we've got plenty of examples where women effectively lead men without having to be perfect. Ayrenn grows as a leader through the five AD zones. Queen Maryah, for all the jester's jokes about her telling Emeric what to do, actually saves his kingdom by sending the Vestige to investigate Necromancers in Alikr. Queen Arzhela steps up to meet the challenge in Bangkorai, among many others. There are also some excellent foils: the bond between the Green Lady and Silvenar, the loyalty between Sotha Sil and Luciana Pullo is notable, as is the respect Holgunn has for Walks-In-Ash in the Pact questline.

Overall, I suspect that players find what they are looking for. If you want to find examples of sexism in ESO, you'll find them. If you want to find positive examples of the Devs/writers handling the subject with maturity, you'll find those too.

(Now, if you were talking about sexism in the playerbase, that's a whole 'nother issue. I suspect that ESO players aren't any better or worse than any other group of people who feel empowered by being relatively anonymous in a game/on the internet.)

Same happens Pc-NA, normally in the starting zones and Ghratwood where i seen it most.
Oddly Cyrodill, has calmed down a lot. But that could be that many of them can't get in and are crashing, or it is some cosmic premeditated karma kick to the taint.

I met this kind of people in pvp. This guy who ask my instagram against leaving me alone, because he tbaged me non-stop and focused everywhere with his endgame build while I was pretty new in eso. This guy who say i have to suck him and show my boobs, in zone chat, this guy I reported and nothing from zenimax has been done.

yes, sexism exist in eso. but it's not everywhere :)

I actually saw ppl making holocaust jokes and others AGREEING with them in ad zone chat on no cp pc EU, and some ppl saying women are only good for certain things . I always speak up, and almost always have ppl whisp me saying thank you, and I refuse to block them because then others will see that rot and I can't report them. It's quite disheartening that something is rarely done about it, even with pictures.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm on NA and rarely go into Cyrodiil.

What you describe is clearly illegal.

Every player regardless of gender, religion etc. has the legal right to enjoy the game without crap like that.

ZO obviously can't literally control everything every player ever says but if they're failing to take appropriate action when these things are reported and if a culture has developed in which such comments are normal, that is illegal.

Video record it. Over multiple days / weeks would be ideal. Submit a complaint to your local anti discrimination authority.

I plan on it, and I do agree with your first statement. Just saying my 2 cents. Atm I can't tell if these players are gone or if I just miss it cuz I crash so often and gave up on cyro atm

I've only had one real "sexism" incident in almost 2 years: was running a new Bosmer through Auridon, heading for the Harborage when I realized someone was running right behind me. I stopped so I could swing the screen to see who it was (could have been a friend who was online and in Auridon right then).

It was someone I didn't know, who immediately whispered me with "I'm looking for someone to go dominant on me, and you look like the type." I was a bit startled.... I mean, that character wasn't even somewhat UNdressed, she was fully covered, and some person wants to get into BDSM?

I didn't even reply - just blocked the player, and went on my way. Totally weird. Not nearly as bad as stuff on WoW though....

I'm familiar with some NPCs making comments and sometimes about players.

But I don't understand what you meant with '*sigh* not another distraction' some npcs will say" and also how that could be misconstrued (by anyone) as sexist.

If some other player has totally randomly and unfairly accused you of sexism purely on the basis of you or your character's gender, that would be an example of them being sexist.

If there's a lot of noise in an area, you may never hear that sort of NPC "aside". I see it as I always have voice muted and subtitles running. It's just a random thing NPCs say occasionally. I think it must be that the OP mentioned it as something s/he heard an NPC say, and got some drastic feedback for it.

Reading all this, I must be playing a different ESO than others. :|

Apart from a few jerks in zone chats and such, I have generally only met nice people. Finding a good social guild with members who are both adult and mentally mature is a great way to ensure most people around you in ESO are nice.
