Consistency matters

A common theme I've been noticing recently is a jarring lack of internal consistency.

Eg. with Murkmire. The main zone quest tells us - in at least two of the quests that I can clearly recall - that the Bright Throat Tribe favours guile. That word "guile" is specifically used in one of them to describe the Bright Throat. The Dead-Water are associated with honesty.

But the zone has a set called set Dead-Water's Guile.

See how that doesn't add up?

Worse, the set has nothing to do with guile / stealth / sneakiness. It boosts ultimate generation.

Slapping random names on sets which are internally inconsistent with the game's own lore is either lazy or foolish. Cos that name is just a few words and super easily changed even if a mistake this silly makes it all the way into the live version of the game.

Similarly there's the new little red torchbug pet. Here we are in the middle of a Murkmire event with little red torchbugs everywhere in the zone. This year's big DLC is heavy on vampires. I thought to myself, surely the pet will be associated with one of those.

Nope. ZO decided to associate it with Elsweyr.

That pet seems about as related to Elsweyr as the purple Amazon mount from last year.

And because all good things come in threes, I've been weighing up classes each other trying to settle on one and I realised that Warden is a bit a hot mess in the consistency department.

Lots of players don't love that many of the animals are Vvardenfell themed. Personally I like that but I've always thought that limited the potential of their appeal. One thing I've never liked about them - or Sorc and DK - is their being two thirds of a class and a random third of the classic TES destruction school. But it occurred to me while playing my warden recently that in their descriptions and lore they're associated with the Bosmer. Shalk, flowers, mushrooms etc. fit with that. Not so much cliff racers and netch. Visually they are definitely more Vvardenfell than anything else.

Either way, Valenwood is a tropical forest and Vvardenfell a tropical island - also with a great honking volcano in the middle.

None of which screams frost magic.

Skyrim and Nords would be a much better fit for that. Since the Wyrd gals have some presence there, if wardens had to be lumped in with ice magic their lore and visuals would have made much more sense associated with them.

If they cared we would have gotten something more interesting than a ladder to Blackreach.
But they're leaving that to our headcanon to sort out.
