Why are you dying in Cyrodiil at the speed you do on Average?

I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to my recent poll (https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/513229/how-often-do-you-die-in-pvp-cyrodiil-not-bg/p1) asking how often you die in Cyrodiil. Much to my surprise the results were actually very close but it appears that there are two distinct groups of Cyrodiil PVPers - those who die repeatedly in less than 10 minutes and those who frequently have lives reaching past 30 minutes or more.

Off hand it’s easy to assume that it’s just the difference between being a tank or not, or how aggressively you’re challenging other players but the comments show a completely different story.

Anyway, let’s assume for a second that you either fall into either the group who frequently dies often or the group that survives a long time on average. What do you believe are the reasons for this?

Personally I wear paper mache for armor but am very good at using other people as meat shields, self heal and shield frequently and always have a potion at the ready to get out of dodge. Thats how I survive a long time on average. I’m also wise enough not to pick fair fights.

Anyway, what are you doing that leads to your frequent fast deaths or frequent lives stretching past the 30 minute mark?

I have a tendency to face tank as much of an opposing alliance as I can get on me. They all know me and now either give me a very wide berth or call in another 30 players to ulti dump. It's very entertaining when I'm not on my tank but they see my name and think I'm tanking. Waisted full group ulti on me and I'm dead before all of them even pop. Of course I am that idiot who will charge face first into a server zerg while alone so yeah, I'll die pretty quick on my DDs.

The single most important factor for me personally that determines how long I live or die is lag/de-sync. The rest, like armor, build, abilities, etc. are all secondary.

    Mine was every 30 minutes though it depends on what I'm playing, doing, and what kind of mood I'm in. Aside from trying to get out of the stuck in combat bug, most of my deaths can be attributed to the following;
    • Not paying attention to DoTs on my character since I get tunnel vision quite easily.
    • Before this patch (have yet to test the new one) terrain would load super slow sometimes and I'm running in place, to which I'm effectively ganked in the most HILARIOUS death animation I've ever seen.
    • Trying to hold off several enemies at once to try and buy time to get reinforcements (which never comes around since I'm DC).
    • Fiddling with the map.
    • Getting lured out, which is always pretty clever.

    Big reasons why I can survive though;
    • Class heals.
    • High mobility using things like Race Against Time.
    • I'll down a stealth pot or two if I take too much ranged damage and go and fix myself up.
    • Sticking near, but not in ally groups because those bombers still can get ya.
    • Paying attention for flanks.
    • Using stealth detection pots, magelight, and flare (if it's really needed).

Those are the things that I can think of off the top of my head.

Either im riding a horse to get to a battle, waiting and a location in anticipation of an impending battle, seiging/repairs/waiting for a rez or just in a zerg that has yet to meet its equal. Outside of that im generally fighting which will ultimately lead to death.

1)Trying to help someone and they bugger off leaving me to deal with 1v3 or more.
    2) Leading grps and silly me thinking people would follow the crown, boom! gone straight head to head with me v a whole grp solo while people are taking a resource i asked them not to...
    3) Being ganked by sneaky people.
    4) Being too cocky
    5) Not being cocky enough
    6) Checking something on my phone and boom someone's killed me while I failed at hiding.
    7) Over estimating healers god like powers (they can only do so much)
    8) Over powered builds that stam characters can use
    9) Loading screens of death
    10) Not paying attention to what I'm going and think I am amazing.
    11) Mucking around with people from other alliances (jumping and bashing etc), their team mate sees yellow and goes mad and tries to kill me while I was being friendly....(cries).

Great call on “paying attention for flanks”. This is very high on the list of mistakes that non regular PVPers often make.

An example of this happened a few days ago. I was helping storm Allesia Keep and about 8 bajillion yellows stormed out the front gate. When this happened I backed up down the hill so I was out of their line of site, moved about 30 meters to my right, and then came back to the hill. At that point I got a half dozen quick kills because the entire yellow Zerg was simply shooting forward instead of looking left and right.

This sort of thing happens a lot.

All good. My poll and this post are aimed at pointing out non-obvious reasons why someone may be better at PVP than you.

Chances are you could beat my brains in in a duel, but then we could go to Cyrodiil and I could get 10 times the kills you do with minimal deaths. I’m not actually all that great at PVP. I’m just good at making my stats look good.

I have no dedicated Cyro character... my main solo PvE sorc tank does pretty much everything, Cyro included, but he's neither built nor dressed for the occasion. That's why he dies in most confrontations. But he loves scouting a lot and thus remains unseen most of the time.

So actually he doesn't die 30 times per half hour - he probably dies once every two hours which still means 'every time he meets enemy player characters'.

I once vowed that I would build a dedicated Cyro char once my main hit 810 CP. He did so recently, and I started to craft (very basic) Cyro stuff for my future Cyro guy.

At this point the only difference between my main character in PVE and PVP is the CP I put into crit resist. While I could theoretically improve my build a small percentage by using “PVP gear” I would drastically gimp my toon in PVP if I used armor with crit resist.

    - Stupid mistakes on my end (dodging too much and draining my stam. Breaking free too slow. Missing a combo. Missing a block, the list is endless)
    - Running into fights where I’m outnumbered (hehe, gotta go for the X, even if I die 9/10 times, it’s still enjoyable)
    - Lag (gotta press skills 3-4 times just for a heal to go off. Roll dodge and my bars are blacked out not allowing me to pop a potion/heal. Game lags and I eat an entire combo my squishiness cant afford to be hit by)
    - Undo bug. (So many time have I been low, popped undo, and my character hippity hops, turns into a ball of light, and nothing happens. Curse you undo. Curse you)
    - Fight players that are genuinely better than me (there are definitely players out there with better builds. Better knowledge. They’re faster, make less mistakes and I’m going to lose. I’ve accepted that and I’ll gladly die over and over and over again to a better player if I can start to learn something from the encounter :) gotta lose to start winning)

Usually it’s making stupid mistakes and fighting better players. Sometimes it’s a combo of both, or hell, everything I’ve mentioned working against me.

    Reasons why I die often

    1. I'm a very aggressive player. Some players say my character name fits me well, "OMG It's Emily Again" :)

    2. I tend to over extend a little. If I am fighting a group of players and see a weak one trying to get away. I tend to try to get him at all costs, which more often is my death.

    3. I'm wearing the same gear since 2016. Except I changed the Jewelry. My gear is pretty much out dated.

    4. I very seldom use any kind of heals, potions, poisons.

    5. I fear Mag Sorc. I have a hardest time fighting them.

    6. Lag hurts sometimes

I've came across many great players but I truly believe the average players is going to have a very hard time beating me. I fight under extreme conditions most the time and learned to maneuver very well. If I actually did group with people, I would be considered "highly Dangerous". :)

Usually when I run into more than one enemy player my controls stop responding. I lost count how many times I've spammed dodge, potions or heals when I needed it most and insta-died instead. Good times!

well, IMHO, in a game - Any Game - where Roles determine How the character is geared and skills predominantly used, there is always going to be the quick dying and the impossible to kill.

Unless a game is designed so that every base character has a limit to the amount of offense, and the same applies to defense, where the real differences are style and cosmetics ( fire mage/ dual weapon/ 2 H weapon/ electric mage/ etc) - so that there are No one-shots - so that no defense is so high, Any opponent can inflict some damage - There will Always be the glass canons and the unkillable tanks.

The concept of tank is to be unkillable but not be able to put out much damage. But That gets to be old and unsatisfying after awhile. Same with Healer, as we have all seen the many threads of healers being treated as second class citizens since they are not supposed to be dishing out damage. Glass canons get all the press and the glory, like the quarterback who never mentions the effort of his offensive line.

This IS the game we signed on to play, and this style of gameplay (tank/healer/dps) is what it is all about. No sense complaining about it. If your character dies quickly, so be it. It should be able to kill other characters quickly as well. If your character never dies, don't expect to rack up a lot of kills.

But we knew all this before we loaded the game for the first time. None of this is a shock to anyone.

Why try to make an issue of it now?

You make some great points. For what it’s worth I’m not making a big deal of it, but hoping to help some players who may not of thought about some small things that may help them survive a bit longer.

I mean, if my only experience was dying in PVP instantly I’d never play ESO PVP either. I don’t play Battlefield for this exact reason.

We all play with lag, and it would make sense that a significant majority of us understand the basics of the MMO build trinity, yet some people still survive longer than others. Some glass cannons can tank in Cyrodiil nearly as well as some tanks. I’d like to shed some light on the “why” of that outside of simply builds or stick skills.

Getting overwhelmed by the complicated things like sometimes I forget to heal, other times I forgot to pop volatile armor, and then there are the times I get 1vXed and can't keep up. When fighting tanks I usually forget the healing and armor thing since I try too hard just trying to hurt them that I forget to stay alive.

I have 15K resists (20K when in the Templar circle thingy) with only 1.6K in crit resist, however I’ve run 0 in the past.

With 25Kish heath it’s quite common for me to burst heal to near 100%, but my actual “oh crap” rotation is ... shield, bar swap, second shield, breath of life and I usually have my heal over time going near 100% of the time so I could definitely envision how something like this would look like a magic self heal.

It’s funny that you’re a NB because the double shields were 100% to combat NBs hitting me with an arrow from stealth.
