If you had a bounty as someone suggested might have happened the pets can react to the guard before you engage as the guard actually started the combat. It would require a bounty stage for kill on sight.

Are you dropping any skills at the time? I remember people complaining that unintentionally healing other players that were flagged as criminals would flag you as a criminal. Barring that, I'd very much like to see some video proof, especially if it's as frequent as some are implying here.
