Any recourse for being ripped off in a trade?

I was trying to buy a motif last night and went with face-to-face since the person was nearby. I posted the money and waited until the other party hit submit before I did; he/she deleted their item as I was hitting submit and then ran. I imagine I am screwed but wasn’t sure if there was any recourse available, even if just to prevent him/her from screwing someone else out of 75k. I do have screenshots of the conversation leading up to the theft, if that helps.

You could try putting in a ticket.

If you remember the @Username you can submit a ticket with the complaint using F1 or use the on-site formula ^_^ Also remember mentioning the time so they can check the info

I would submit a ticket with the screenshots.

Hopefully you can get your gold back.

I concur with this. My understanding is that ZOS will ban people for this sort of behavior.

I got my gold back when I reported and screenshotted the scammer. Took a bit for them to look into it, but it all worked out in the end.

Thanks folks. Looks like a burner Xbox account as there was no gamerscore. Sucks for me but lesson learned. Hopefully I can prevent someone else from getting screwed.

Tell them to COD it to you for the price. Offer to pay COD tax if needed. IIRC, the tax is like 5%.

No legitimate seller will refuse to do this.

I would still report it. That burner had to give the gold off to someone, and every step is logged on the back end. I do not know if they will go that far but it would not be hard for them to see what that account was up to.

Film it, try opening a ticket. But face to face isn't intended for secure trade, COD is and this can't happen with COD

It's ok to buy via COD but dont sell. There are trolls out there who are not interested buying, they just let you send stuff and it will sit there. You get no gold and your item is stuck.

It auto-returns after 3 days in that scenario. But that's still 3 days in limbo in which you cannot sell the item to a real buyer.

The article says you can also report it to Microsoft directly.

Although honestly I think they need to update this response. ZOS repeatedly says they are unable to provide compensation for scams, yet they clearly do provide compensation pretty frequently.

I will refuse to do this. The last idiot who asked for COD specifically did not accept it. I think he tried to batch ask for CODs and wait till one makes the mistake of attaching gold instead of a COD.

In case I would ever again COD deliver, i would report the player who does not accept it.

It used to be that if someone altered attachments in the trade window, the accept got canceled and had to be reaccepted but I've noticed lately that trades can be amended after one person has accepted without them getting a chance to look at the changes before the trade is finalized.

Just a simple but hard lesson for future trades really...you can submit a ticket and they may face some consequences but overall it will make you more aware of shady players in the future. Sorry that happened OP but karma is also a ***** too.

Since it seems you're a console player my advice is: always check the player's profile before doing any business. This goes for this type of trade (trade in person) or crown trade.Players with no gamescores (xbox) or no trophies (psn) are suspicious and more likely to be scammers trying to take advantage of others with some alt accounts.

The other safe option is COD as referred above by others: any legit buyer doesn't mind to pay the COD fee (it's a water drop in a cup full of water). Some sellers might not even charge you the COD fee, if the amount is too small. (that's my MO).

There would be an easy fix to this:

One additional click and a short cooldown. If one makes changes, you start over again with clicking twice.

It sounds like they deleted the item and submitted in the brief span of OP seeing the original offer and OP actually hitting submit. @Salvas_Aren is right- adding an additional click and cooldown would solve the problem.

People can COD lies too...not like you can check what motif it is till you open it. Only thing to do is take screenshots or videos and submit a ticket so they get banned

You can. You can preview attachments of mail before actually taking the attachments and paying the COD. I highly recommend ALWAYS doing that lest you get flour instead of aetherial dust (icons look almost identical).

Not sure how to do so on XBox, but on PS4 you can preview attachments by clicking in on the right joystick, considered "R3".

Another thing you can do when you tend to batch-accept any mail is get rid of all gold, one possible way would be to use bandit UI and autopush gold to bank, i have set the pull-push treshold to 2k gold, so scammers, if you need 2k ...

It's the only truely secure way to trade.

Sure the odd person will troll and hold onto an item but that's only for a couple of days. Face to face trade has a risk, albeit slight but enough get caught out

And I would never do business with you. If you do not want to use the only secure system outside of guild stores, you are too risky to do business with.

And, this whole hold on to an item thing rarely happens. I think it has happened to me twice, and that was for very low priced items. Where the buyer asked in Zone Chat for some prov ingredients. Probably got some for free so ignored my COD. It has never happened for something of a substantial price.

Don't trade with strangers aka random ppl. Only trade with ppl you trust. Friends etc.. that way you won't be ripped off again.

Lesson learned. CoD or trusted people for face-to-face from here on out. I am still going to submit a ticket to ZOS in the hopes of some form of punishment against the other party.

Still file the ticket but don't hold you're breath. But it's always good to see someone learn there lesson.
