What does unknown player mean when you try to send a mail?

I tried to send a mail today to a player I've known for years. The @address, was definitely correct. When I tried to send the mail though, I got an unknown player message. Did it mean the account was deactivated? Was I blocked? Not sure, in either case, why the @address still exists? Thanks in advance for an answer

Thanks for the answers so far, but neither are the case, unless server hamster.

I am trying to send to account name - tried about 10 times, not a typo. It is also a different player, and not an alt

In my experience its either because the player has logged out, or blocked communication somehow.

I was kind of hoping it was because the account had been deactivated. No one has suggested this, so, I guess I have to go with blocked. Nothing else seems to apply.......... sigh......... don't know why I'd be blocked - that really hurts We played as partners when on together for 4 years............... geez

If you only tried the @name then maybe they changed that?
If you remember a character name you might try to send the mail to the character name.

You could also ask someone else to send them a mail and see what kind of message they get.
If the first message goes through but further messages don't then someone is actively blocking users.
This could be another person if the account has "moved on".

So, I'm able to message 2 out of 15 characters.......... thank you for the idea. I sent messages obviously. I just find this very surreal/weird. Anyway, it would be greatly appreciated if ZOS could confirm what circumstances lead to the Unknown Player thing. I'll just assume I'm blocked and somehow 2 characters still exist, whom I can message, although the other 13 don't show up as existing at all.

All very bewildering........
