Thoughts on Updated Update for Undaunted Event

For those who missed it, Gina updated the Update on Undaunted event.

Since the thread is locked for obvious reasons we can discuss it here.

Personally, since im in IT bussines myself, not in game industry tho but in datacenter whit large web host providers, the road map and the approach looks pretty reasonable (finally). Also knowing how DB's can hit server resources hard if not optimized properly, or possibly like in ZOS case with parts of the faulty code that are doing a poo poo with DB queries, everything written there seem reasonable.

In general, it looks like Ok plan, maybe we could give them some slack on this one.

Let's hear your opinions.

I hope it'll last longer than the initially planned four days. A longer event might give people less of an urgency feeling, so that would reduce the affluence a bit and thus server stress?

I'm just glad they are planning to bring it back, and before the end of the year. Although the almost back-to-back event schedule could be rough for some people. Dawn of the Dragonguard runs from 26th November - 8th or 9th December (depending on if you go by the news article or Gina's post) and New Life is due to start on the 19th. So we'll probably have the Undaunted event from the 12th - 15th/16th which means we've only got about 4 or 5 days in December without events running.

I'm not sure yet what I'll be able to do (even assuming those are the correct dates), except I know I'll miss most of New Life. But since December is often a very busy month for a lot of people I can imagine anyone who wants to get more than a few rewards from the events is going to find themselves without much time for anything else.

Other than that I just hope they actually manage to fix the group finder this time. The fact that they had to actually cancel an event - especially one which ties into a larger schedule with rewards designed to only be obtainable by players participating in all the events - seems to have given them the incentive to actually fix it instead of telling us we don't know how to use it correctly or saying they'll fix it at some point and letting the same problems happen over and over and over again. I just hope whatever they're doing works, and continues to work after future patches.

I'm just hoping they get Groupfinder working properly for Dungeons AND Battlegrounds.

I don't just want the Undaunted Event to work right. I want Midyear Mayhem back!

How can you say that it is an "ok plan" when it's exactly what they have said in the past ? They haven't changed a thing in what they are "updating" us with.

I cannot say what happend in the past. Players comes and go. I'm a pretty new player so I did not go through the same or similar issues before. I was commenting the current situation and current plan. And also that's why the thread is here, so your input on this is appreciated.

So they fix the activity finder and that's it?

Are they aware that on PC-EU people had no hope of even trying to use the group finder because they either couldn't log in at all or were stuck in endless loading screens?

Those problems (servers breaking under heavy load at prime time almost every night, especially during events) have been known since the release of Dragonhold and ZOS seem to have stopped caring at this point (except for the ritual posting of that "we're investigating" banner and announcing the issues to be "resolved" after players log off...).

Honestly, I just wish they took their time fixing it permanently rather than trying to rush it because certain people are overly fussed about the u daunted event.
I’d rather have things fixed for the long run rather than current demand because we all know it won’t be fixed this year

I'm glad they are going to try and bring back the event, even though now this means back to back events. However i'm glad they are working on getting some kind of fix.

That being said: What happens if their fix doesn't solve the problem? Will they have a back up plan? Is it enough time to make sure everything is actually fixed?

I guess we'll just have to find out the answers when the event returns I suppose. I think they should have just given out the event tickets/style pages through another way like delves or something. That way things wouldn't be so cramped event wise and they could spend more time fixing whatever is causing issues.

I'm not sure about it. I'm in the camp that says they should just not run the Undaunted event. I don't think anyone's going to be upset if they don't. I think adding the boxes to the *Dragonguard event makes more sense--as drops from the dragons, or from the dungeon portion of the event. Bring back the second Indrik berry, as well as introduce the third, for Dragonguard. New Life happens as scheduled. This puts less pressure on players through the month of December and gives them much more time to work on the Activity Finder.

*I thought about it for a minute, and realized there's an obvious problem with adding the boxes to the Dragonguard event: not everyone has the DLC. So, New Life it is, then.

It is what it is. Hopefully they do significant due diligence and stress test it before the event. That is about all that can be said.

I don't do Undaunted, and I'm not doing Dragonguard. Neither are anything that's fun for me. I've got tickets for the second berry right now on the only account that needs it, and New Life should cover most of the other two berries (I REALLY love New Life). If I don't have quite enough for the 4th berry, I'll buy however many tickets I need.

Assuming the Impresario doesn't disappear while I'm running a 140 mile round trip again....

Not , necessarily, there are other options, which where not presented, since they F-up, they could set a plan to reimburse the players, although not obligated to by Tos, for service unavailable, so... Gina's thread is locked, but this be will will be seen. Also tnx for input.

I think they have no idea if it will work properly. They are throwing darts.

I can forgive the problems with the activity finder during this past summer. However, the failures of the tool since Dragonhold launched are inexcusable as are any surprised expressions from personnel about the tool’s problems. They clearly did not perform adequate (or any) testing and review of the tool.

As such, I have zero confidence their changes will work. If they do miraculously work, then great. However, I would advise against anyone getting their hopes up on these latest changes actually working.

Well, yeah. I could see that being a logical option. But I'm not sure I think that's going to happen.

I'm happy they heard us and are now providing consistent updates. I believe that ZOS will work to resolve the issue. It may be a longer process than some might like, but that's IT and networking. It takes testing and time and there's no easy way to predict what a fix or change will do when tested under load until it is tested under load.

I also believe that if after years of disappointment in the game - as it seems some people on the forums have - that a wise consumer should stop investing their hard earned money in a product and go elsewhere. So if you're one of these people, you might want to consider speaking with your almighty dollar/euro, since no matter what ZOS does, you seem to be dissatisfied; move on. Why frustrate yourselves really?

I think they’ve been much better at communicating this time compared to last year. That’s one positive thing to build on.

I think the plan is the best they could have put forward. It seems very ambitious in that it assumes their fixes can be done in time, are effective and stable enough to cope with demand. It assumes that the same QA process that passed the group finder last time, miraculously manages to spot any new issues before the PC EU test platform crashes again. Their track record here is sadly unconvincing on every level.

Personally, I think the timescale is foolish and they would be far wiser to cancel the event, dampen down demand for it and put their energy into solving the group finder issues permanently. There is absolutely no reason to have 3 separate events going on in December. And no reason at all to shoehorn this one into the schedule unnecessarily. They’ve had a year to get the group finder working and have failed spectacularly, so I’m highly sceptical that it can be sorted out in a couple of weeks. But I’d love nothing more than to be wrong here.

Short term, I’m really OK with them cancelling the event. Especially if it means a better, more robust group finder by the beginning of next year.
