Why not just SAY the account server is down?

Logging in the other day, I was greeted with the lovely "Login failed. Your username or password may be incorrect or inactive at this time..." So I tried again, carefully. And again. OMG! Someone hacked my account! So I immediately went to the site to reset my password. That looked like it didn't work, at first, then I got the confirmation email, so I tried again with the new password. Same response. Fifteen minutes later, I log in just fine.
So, yeah, all that worry for nothing. It was just the account server hiccuping or whatever. Is there a good reason for the lies? Just tell us it's not working right now, fer cryin' out loud.

so to tell you something seems not to work.
And that someone hacked you, was your interpetation. Therefore it's your business, not ours.
