Steam Servers?

How come ESO can't utilize Steam's servers for the game? Wouldn't it be beneficial for all players to pick a server with the best ping? WvW and pvp battlegrounds I get 100-120ping and I have 50Mb down. I'm guessing the current server is somewhere in the Midwest?

Many players do not use Steam launcher and for example I don't even have Steam installed.

Steam does not have game servers, only login servers. Steam players play on the same game server as PC players without steam do.

Oh didn't know that. Thought they had that service providing servers.

I have steam but I do not have ESO on steam because I started playing it before ESO was on steam. With all the problems ESO players have had with steam in the past, I am very glad I don't have it on steam.

Same here. When I bought ESO console release was still a rumour and I don't think anyone even mentioned Steam.

I do have it installed but only use it when I can't run a game any other way, which currently is just Dragon Age Inquisition. Whenever possible I prefer to install and run games directly, because the fewer "services" I have to go through the fewer things that can go wrong or suddenly decide actually they don't want to support that game any more and I'm not allowed to play it.

So if they were to add Steam servers for ESO they'd have to split the PC playerbase between those who have Steam and those who don't, and I can't imagine that would be very popular.

Its better play a MMO or any other always online game without Steam if it's possible. Not having another potential point of failure is a good enough reason.

(There are other reasons to prefer not getting games through Steam. For me good enough to scrap my - not that small - Steam library and get the few games I actually play with no Seam or any other 3rd party attached. But that's not relevant to ESO.)

TBH the only reason I use Steam is because I was given a gift voucher last year, basically meaning I could try PC ESO for no cost to myself.

I made the purchase well aware of the potential issues Steam brings, but that is why I do not complain when those things happen.

Steam/No Steam...I have both and don't really notice a difference. My ping is always around 75 to 90. Maybe check your DNS servers? I use the Google Public DNS ( 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). Hope this helps.

I understand typical possible Steam ESO trouble is logging in game after maintenance.

I think there should be no difference playing the game with or without Steam if you can launch it unless Steam overlay or ESO related purchases thru Steam can cause trouble. Not having Steam, I'm no expert.

I simply must protest. There are no Penguin avatars for me to use in the forums.

    BTW, I use arch too

I can't understand why anyone would use Steam if they had any alternative. I have it for Skyrim, because it's the only way it can be played, but if there was ever an option to play without it, I would.

Giving a third party the ability to withhold your access to a game you didn't buy from them is just nuts!

Same here ... the only game I have on Steam is Skyrim. Because Steam is required to play it.

I have never had trouble with Steam, ESO yes, but not through anything to do with Steam.
