Zaan and 1-shot mechanics

What the hell is the trick to killing Zaan on vet mode? Our group seemed to do fine with the mechanics until the random spouts of death from the dragon statues started and it wiped us every time.

People would roll out of it, but usually, by the time we saw the telegraph on the ground it was too late and we were being 1-shotted. Is there a trick to that? A special place to stand? What? (I am not talking about the shield thing).

@Zos: is this really necessary? Who at your office is like "man, I hate our players so much!!!"

Well, yeah, that would be the ultimate goal...

this is a very easy fight as long as you are always paying attention to your placement and are watching the statues.
you should spend the fight straddling the border between two cone attacks (you'll get a feel for where this is). Never dodge roll, because your position isn't actually updated until the dodge is done, so just walk or run.

Always have the statues in your sight, and always pay attention to them to see which one will light up green at the head. if it lights up, it's about to create a cone.

It's a very very easy fight, especially if dps is good (you shouldn't see cones at all in vet non hardmode tbh) you just have to keep track of multiple things.

Ah... that makes more sense. I had no idea their heads lit up. We weren't doing HM as far as I know, but were still getting those cones.

you'll get them in non-hardmode too, it's just easy to burn the boss to each ice phase before a cone can spawn in non hardmode due to lower health

in summary: if you're not facing/watching the statues, you're likely about to die

In summary MORE deeps will help..

40k COMBiNED dps will push Zaan through ice phase with no mechanics...40k....

So just burn the boss. Not being elitist here 40k for a group is not a lot.

If you are on Xbox Na. I’ll help you. Me and a buddy 4 dps the whole dungeon on vet with all levels of willing and unwilling pugs.

I'm not sure how to build a tank that can do 40k dps and be able to take the hits. It would be nice though. Thanks for the offer but I'm on PC NA.

I believe he meant 40k combined total over your whole party, not from each player. So really your DD only need to push out 20k each.

which is easy, but the fight is still easy without. just play the mexhanic and pay it attention. you cant play this game reactively all the time, you have to always anticipate

If you have low dps then just place yourselves better. If you running all over the place or stand randomly like in the middle or on edge then you will not make it out the cone. Room is split into 3 cones. Try to stand on the border of two cones. When aoe shows up, all you have to do is take a step to the left or right.

Have the tank hold the boss on the dividing lines, facing the boss toward the statues. The statues flare red before the red indicator appears on the ground so dps and healer have time to see it, and the tank will be standing on the line so they can shuffle one step either way to be safe.

yeah, easy tick is just to stand/fight near the statues so the cone is narrower there and you can simply walk out of it.

A.) Don’t use the back half of the room ever. I’ve seen more “leet” players dodging flames behind the broken pillar then dying 10s later to the plague breath than I can ever count.

B.) Three DPS w/ Barrier and/ or shields. (Or a healer with gear and CP allocation to swap at that point).

    C.) A very self-sustaining tank.

I would like to point out that if you are on PC there is an addon called ‘codes combat alerts’ which is very helpful with dealing with the cone aoes specifically on this fight. If you are struggling with this fight and do not have it installed I highly recommend getting it, even if you already have raid notifier.

Have the tank stand literally under the dragon's heads, with their back to the statue. Dps stand directly behind zaan, facing the statue. Fight the whole fight from here. Occasionally someone will have to kite fire, etc, but it's never really an issue. When she throws her shield, everyone gets in it. When she moves to pick it up, everyone gets back under the statue. The cones are shallow enough there to literally sidestep them. That's probably the safest method and the method I've used when tanking her for tons of no death runs for guildies.

It’s a tough fight that demands group coordination and awareness.

One solution is the typical ‘burn the boss before the mechanics appear’, but that’s unlikely to work for you as if you could do that you’d have done it by now.

Xynode has a very useful ‘All About Mechanics’ video on YouTube

Hope that helps and good luck

Yes I mean ALL people in your party dps added together needs to be 40k. And again you won’t receive any ‘hits’ from the boss by just burning him.......

In addition to all of the positioning advice, do not roll out of the cones. The attack itself is undodgeable and dodge roll does not actually move your character until the end of the animation. So even though you see you character mid-roll outside of the cone from the game's point of view you are still standing there just with some dodge frames on you. Always walk out of mechanics like these instead of dodging.

One-shot mechanics are plentifull in dlc dungeons, just like most II dungeons like to smother you with adds.

Keep an eye on those statues to see which one lights up. That one will attack.

One shot mechanic is usual in vet content.

    Steps to kill Zaan:

-Avoid all red AoE circles of death
-Have the tank or healer block the fire beam when placed on another player
    -Kill Frost atronachs ASAP
-Run to the shield before the room turns red
-Get out of the shield before she charges

It's better if the tank holds the boss near the Dragon's head so the rest of the team can stand behind her in front of the statue.

    That's basically it.

Its a L2P issue, here are some tips:
Divide the stage in 3 slices of pizza, always stand on the 2 cuts, stay near to the statues, always keep the statues in your field of view... or just upgrade your dps, only one good dps is needed for skipping all the mechanics of that fight except the ice and shield mechanic

Even two middle of the road DPS should be able to do it. The pizza analogy is a good one.

as someone who has done that horrible evil dungeon with the no death achievement ... here's my biggest piece of advice.

stand on the edges of the slices. So there's 3 possible poison waves: left, center, and middle, each making a cone shape that sweeps out. When at all possible, have your group and the tank situated in a way so that you're on the line between two waves, so that if either one activates, you can take 1 step to the side and not be in the middle of it caught in a dead zone. Also, the closer to the statues you are the easier it is to get out of the way as the surface area is thinner the closer to the statue you get.
