Quick question about volatile armor

So one of the components to this skill is "while active , the armor returns XXXX magic damage to any enemy that uses a direct damage attack against you". Does this returned damage count as direct damage? I'm not talking about the DoT that's attached to the skill the "from the spray of spikes", simply the damage given to the player if they hit you with a direct damage attack.
