This is awesome ZOS, I want this to be an actual thing
I want to be able to just whack enemies in melee with my staves

As much hate as Dragon Age 2 got, they did an awesome job with combat, and added melee animations for mages when enemies got close. Instead of running away like so many other magic users are forced to do, Hawke could whack and club the enemy with her/his staff, which makes much better sense in a fight. I mean, who wouldn't use a giant stick of wood to beat an aggressor if they got too close?

A lot of that hate was undeserved IMO. DA2 was a pretty decent game on it's own. I think the problem was mostly that it wasn't good as a sequel. But yeah, I loved the way staves were handled so they were actually weapons rather than the way most other games up to that point portrayed them. That being little more than a big stick that you wave around in a panic if an enemy ever got close to you.

In one of the crafting motifs (Dark Brotherhood or Thieves Guild staves) it even explicitly says that the staff should be made like a 2-handed maul, so that it can be used as one in a pinchOddly enough, there are some Staves that look more like axes and maces than some of the two handed axes and maces.
I've had a similar thing happen on my magplar - somehow I got interrupted mid-Sweeps and he ended up wielding the spear of light instead of his destro staffHapexamendios wrote: »lol
I’ve been fishing before and gotten interrupted. The fishing pole temporarily became one of my duel wield weapons.
